3 Keys to Accomplishing Anything

keys to accomplishmentThis is a guest post by Srinivas Rao of StokedforLife and TheSkoolofLife.

Although Srinivas and I just met recently, I had a chance to talk with him over a beer at the Pink Taco in LA and I could tell within minutes that he’s on his way to making big things happen.

When you set out to accomplish any goal, there are going some essential qualities that will be absolutely necessary if you want to successfully reach your destination.

In the many conversations I’ve had with bloggers, entrepreneurs, and other successful people over the last several months, I’ve realized that the 3 keys to accomplishing anything are focus, passion, and action.

Focus: When I asked Rich Lazzara who mainly deals with very wealthy customers in his yacht business what sets the ultra-wealthy entrepreneur apart from the average person, he said focus. These people, live, breathe, eat, sleep, and think business 24 hours a day 7  days a week.

As I look back over my life, I realized that I’ve always been somebody who can generate idea after idea, but in my past, due to ADHD, I’ve been challenged with focus.  Harnessing your idea generation ability and gaining laser like focus can really propel you into the stratosphere. For bloggers, that means treating it like a business and continually thinking of ways to improve your blog.

Which brings me to my next point.

PassionFocus is only challenging when you don’t have a passion for something. When you’re passionate about something, you tend to have a production capability that is far beyond what it is in other areas of your life.

I think part of the reason I never have issues coming up with content or new ideas for the direction of my blog is because I really enjoy writing, innovating, and connecting with people. This actually it turns out is one of my greatest passions.

Last night I even found I had trouble sleeping because I wanted to get up and write about an idea that had just come to me. When passion meets focus, the line between work and play begins to blend and you return to the life where you are a kid in a candy store. You truly start to live what Jonathan Mead calls “The Zero Hour Workweek”

Action: While focus an passion are necessary, without action they are just feel good ways of convincing yourself that you are getting somewhere when you are standing still. I see many bloggers, entrepreneurs, and other people who have dozens of ideas, that are in more financially stable situations then I am, and may even have more raw talent than I do. Yet, they don’t take action towards making changes. Action is really key to getting from point A to B and ultimately propelling yourself into the stratosphere.

Ask yourself these questions and start moving in the right direction:

1.    What am I passionate about?
2.    How can I improve my focus?
3.    What actions can I take today?

In fact if you print these 3 questions out and put them on your wall, you’ll see that your daily progress towards all your goals will increase exponentially.

Editors note: mine are 1. building businesses and creating, 2. Change my scenery and stop multitasking, 3. Write, communicate, and share.

What are your three?

  • Srini will be on my blog next Monday. He's gets about faster than the Roadrunner. Beep beep!

Having passion without action causes me to become depressed. Anyone find the same?
  • haha - Roadrunner, I like that.

Passion without action is depressing, and even when it's not consistent action. Can add a lot of pressure unless you prioritize.
  • Absolutely agreeing to that. Passion is nothing with no actions -- No dreams can be fulfilled, no challenges can be overcome; Life can be meaningless as nothing excites us anymore. Focus is equally important or else we can't really get anything done properly. Personally I'll add 'determination' too as to be consistent even in failures is equally important.

Wish you well & continue to inspire us with great posts, Nathan.

  • So happy to have you visit us over here, and thanks for your generous comment :)

You are absolutely right about action being important, and that's one of the key concepts I preach over here. Even if you don't know what or how to do it, just take action!
  • I was always an idea generator, but in my younger days I tried to do too many things at once. Having a lot of energy for projects, but falling short on the action because of multi-tasking means that something will end up being less than you envision. At the end of the day, action dedicated to a single goal is what pays off best.

The 3 keys you've identified here are the keys to success and balancing them becomes critical. Very good post, Srinivas.
  • There are so many things that seem impossible to achieve and when you are looking at them from the bottom of the hill. The only thing that I will say is that getting up the hill doesn't take skill or money but just a lot of hard work and effort. You just need to keep pumping those legs and you'll get up that hill eventually :)
  • Exactly, at some point, you just have to roll up your sleeves and get to work!
  • Srini, you are everywhere! I can't say more than that I completely agree with you. As I've moved more towards my passion, I've noticed the same "can't-sleep-because-I-have-an-idea" effect. Keep rocking!
  • Henri,

What can I say? Welcome to an early start on my Q1 Marketing Plan :)
  • I am definitely missing out on that last one. I don't deliberately prevaricate but there are times when my focus dims!
  • Kevin,

Without action the other two become nice to haves, but don't nearly have the impact that they could on your life if you add action to the mix.
  • Nathan,

Thanks for the compliments and the opportunity to guest post here. I learned alot from speaking with you over dinner and I look forward to seeing you again. I think you are headed for big things as well, and at some point we'll be saying "back in the day when we were up and coming bloggers :)".
  • You bet, and I look forward to future celbrations over even more great food and much more great beer :)
  • I love this article, but I do want to add a word of caution. I started my own business two years ago, and I've been going at it 24/7. I am passionate, and am a person of action. The caution has to do with the idea of 24/7. I now strongly believe that no matter how much you love what you are doing, you must stop, rest and reflect on where you are headed. All work and no play can cause illness, depression and alienation from those you love. I think an important word in reaching goals is "balance." If you have that, all the other keys will fit into the lock of success in good time.
  • @Docudramqueen: I'm definitely a big fan of balance. I've grown in up an all work and no play culture and see what happens to people who take that approach. For me, I"ve been fortunate that I have the ocean, which provides not only balance, but also inspiration for many of the articles that I write.
