Guest Post Friday: Being Smart, Sacrifice, and Avoiding Shortcuts

Midnight Oil

This is the first submission for what I”ve decided to call “guest post Fridays,” which is my way of sharing the work of awesome bloggers without changing my current posting schedule.

This guest post is written by James, The Infopreneur, who happens to be a writing machine and a very hard worker. Read his blog and then follow him on Twitter.

Question:

Who here has a job?

Regardless of whether part-time or full-time, I’m betting that most people reading this will have a job of some sort.

Now, who here wants to leave that job and make there living from the comfort of there own home via the Internet? Of those that said yes, how many of you can’t do that until you are actually earning enough to leave your job?

*raises hand*

I want to spend more time with my family instead of working a 60hr week on the road driving my truck. Most of us aren’t chasing the million dollar dream, we would be more than happy to replace our wages by working from home.

But, the majority of us chasing the dream are in a permanent catch 22. We can’t make enough money because we don’t have the time and we need to make money in order to have the time to make money, one big vicious cycle.

So how do I plan on breaking this pattern?

Building Phase

I am building my site while I am working, so essentially, I’m doing it on someone else’s dollar. It’s the best way to do it by far…you build a site, a community, and eventually a product list while you maintain full time employment.

This takes the risk out of it, but you still need to stay focused at work, as it’s your employer that is paying your bills. If you get in the mindset of wishing every minute that you can leave your full time job, then you become filled with negative vibes, which will come through in the work that you are doing to build a business. By all means, get that dream and realize it, but stay focused at your full time job until the day comes you can hand in your notice.

The last thing you want to do, especially if you have a family and mortgage is cash it all in before your business is producing income for you. Take your time and build the foundations to build a solid platform which you can pile bricks onto without fear of them falling over.

Sacrifice

I’ve talked about sacrifices before on my own blog…you need to make them simple!

Time watching TV, nights out partying, and even gym time all needs to be reduced to give you more time to work on your business model or site. How much time could you save in your daily routine if you tried?

In my case, I couldn’t squeeze any more time out the day but since I’m on the cusp of monetizing… I’m happy for the time being.

As I said, I work a 60hr week and probably work on average 4-6hrs a day on the site, so all in all I work around 100hrs a week between my full time job and the site.

That is a hell of a lot of hours, but it will be worth it and I can see results already.

Think about how much TV you want to watch, how much time you actually spend visiting websites and chat rooms, or how much time you spend playing FarmVille on Facebook.

If this is more than 5 minutes, have a serious word with yourself and get working on your goals and dreams. Think about it this way…sacrifices right now free up time later on.

If you have a dream, it isn’t going to be handed to you, know why? Because everyone else knows they have to chase it and they already have a head start on you…they left the starting blocks strong so you have to catch up now.

By all means read information that will help and motivate you, but if you read too much you will fall on your face well before the finish line.

Remember the Fire

Did you start your site a few weeks ago…or even a few months ago or longer?

Do you sometimes lose your way and not update the content for a while or not work on producing new products?

Remember back to the very first thought you had about your website or business. What made you want to start it…why did you have that compulsion to say “I’m going to do it?”

Go back to that initial feeling and keep that fire alive. Fire will drive you on as fast as your body can carry you, so keep in mind why you are doing it.

Listen guys…a website, business, or blogger falls by the way side everyday for whatever reason, just the other day a good friend of mine has decided to take a long break from it all.

Burnout is an issue, but I always say it’s only an issue if you aren’t 100% meant to be doing it, if you’re not passionate about it, or have too many things pulling you in different directions.

I have a stack of ideas, not just online ventures but patent ideas too. Do I do anything about them? Hell no, my site is my only business priority at the moment, how can I expect to make a success out of three websites if I haven’t done one yet.

This is my point…you need to focus on your objective and you absolutely need to put the hours in.

Do it on someone else’s buck, but make sure you do it, no lottery tickets are round the corner, no rich distant relatives you don’t know about, just you and your own drive will get you to the top.

I’m a complete dumb ass, the original dumb ass if you like. I have an IQ of 94 and no qualifications to talk about, but I am motivated and street wise…well, I know for a fact that hard work pays off.

As a final thought, think of it this way…you know those sponge quick shine things you can get for your shoes to make them look shiny and clean? Clean shoes in seconds, right?

So why would anyone use actual brushes and polish?

I’ll tell you why…because the polish nourishes the leather. It protects it and provides a deeper and longer lasting shine. Get your brushes out and start working, no such thing as a quick shine in real life.

Are you about to break the cycle?

If so, tell me…how are you doing it?

Release Your Dreams

Your blog really hits the nail! I am presenting Bootcamps for new members of the Corona Chamber of Commerce and your thoughts, first person accounts/shared by comments make for excellent testimonials on how to dream, start the fires, and keep them burning as entrepreneurs. I love the cordial tone of your controbutors. Being a National Certified career Counselor, it is refreshing to find/access actual first line tales from the trenches since it also helps me crash "dreams" that do not belong in the fold- hope you know what I mean. As just implied, there are dreamers without substance or color to their dreams out there. Your contributors have a positive thing in common, and that is DRIVE.

Will visit again often. Thanks for the doorbell!
  • Hey brother feel free to get in touch if you want me to send in a video for your bootcamp or anything
  • First of all how many people really shine shoes anymore? I do and I have to get that spit polish that my dad taught me. No shortcuts there. No shortcuts to the website either. My ass and my desk chair are darn near inseparable for a good portion of the day.
Thanks for all of your inspiration James, you do kick ass.
    Justin
  • Hey brother thanks man. Yeah not many actually take time to put the amount of hours in these days. You're definately showing them the way
  • Yeah I used to write for Gordie. It is a shame he has decided to take a break but seems the best thing for him.
  • Hey brother, yeah man a massive shame he and the rest of your team were doing great things. I loved visiting that site. What are you guys up to now are you taking that site forward or focusing on your own sites now?
  • Very interesting post James. Sometimes we are "forced" to take the step. Several years before i was fired in oct 2008 from the company i used to work for, i was always just thinking and making plans but not taking actions in order to become independent.
Now i work in my home and i'm very glad. I don´t loose time driving my car, having lunch outside, etc. I save 4 or 6 hours every day. That makes the work very efficient and productive. I end some projects in one day!.
But i have some rules: go to bed on time, wake up early, make my bed, take a shower, shave my face, have my breakfast. Never work on pijamas. Yes, I'm my own boss, but i'm my employee too, and i don't want a lazy employee. Do you?
  • Hey Samuel,

That is a fantastic attitude and a great set of rules, I especially love the no pj's at work rule, good for you.

When it's you doing the work you have to keep motivated
  • James, I don't have a "real" job, so to speak, but I work harder now than I ever have. There is a reason for it though: I am driven by $$$!

Being an internet marketer, or whatever you want to call earning money online, is probably the hardest work I have ever done. Not physical like other jobs I have had, but I work 80-100hrs a week right now. Yes part of that is on Twitter, part of it is reading 100's of articles and commenting all over the place, but that is all part of the job. I am usually on my computer from 9am until sometimes 2-3am. But I am working on several new projects and before I dive into them, I do a lot of research, and I mean a lot of research! I have even cut down on my posting at HBT to only a few times a week while looking at some other ideas I have been researching.

Yes, I do take time when I want to and go play golf for a week in Florida, but even then I have to take a laptop so I can keep my product customers happy at a minimum.

I probably could do a little better at my time management, and cut my workload down by outsourcing a few things, but hey, I love what I do or I would go back to working 9-5 to make someone else all the money :-)
  • Good comment brother, golfing in Florida sounds fantastic!

Yeah I agree you have to put the hours in for sure, I like you have a lot of ideas, but for me it's key to focusing on one before starting another, dude you're killing it at the moment what other plans you got going on?
  • Well, I have a slight ADD problem, but I always have multiple projects working because I am exploring different ways to make money. Sometimes I might toss an idea around for 6mos before actually doing something with it, doing market research, keyword research, and earning research to evaluate if it is worth any investment or actual action.

I am currently working on some niche sites, along with some affiliate things I have been researching, but mostly I am still testing and researching to see if I want to pursue them.

Some people do better only concentrating on one project at a time, and it usually shows in their results. My results vary, but I am able to keep focused on the projects that are most important first, and then do research for other stuff in my "free time".
  • lol ''Free Time'' love it.

Yeah I am the opposite I have OCD which kind of explains the two sides of our coins, neither right nor wrong just different ways really, I know if I went with another idea I would lose focus which is why I stick to this
  • I guess I'm in the perfect position - as a college student with no way to get a job because of my schedule, I have nothing to lose on this blogging thing. So I dedicate all my free time on it and I'm making progress. I figure that by the time I'm out of school and CAN get a job, I won't need to. That definitely gives me some motivation.

I'm making sacrifices, sure, but I'm finding ways to balance everything too - I'm doing everything I can so that I WILL break the cycle. Even if it means not hitting up every party or getting perfect A's on everything.

    Great post, James.
  • Hey Fiona,

Yeah that sounds ideal. Good for you for hanving the foresight to get things planned.

If you need anything just give me a shout
  • James, your hard work is admirable. Having had a job and worked on the side...I know exactly what it's like. I still don't know how you do it, but you've got an amazing work ethic.

    Keep kicking ass.
  • hey brother thanks my man, I have literally just walked in from work and while my site is being backed up I thought I would get stuck into replying here!

    Thanks for the post dude
