Saturday Project Update – Respecting Brilliance [and Free Manual]

brillianceRespecting Brilliance

Brilliance is a word that should stand for something. It should be used sparingly, to distinguish only those people or thoughts that deserve it.

Why then, do people abuse this word as if it’s nothing special? For example, read through a blog comment section and you’ll see a lot of “brilliant post!” The same is true on Twitter and YouTube.

If everything becomes brilliant, then how do we identify what really stands out? Spectacular? Incredible?

None of those really sing the praises that brilliance does. Brilliance speaks of mind and action. It speaks of enduring qualities.

Yet it’s being bastardized and brought down to a level that doesn’t deserve it.

Not everything is brilliant. Let’s respect the word by reserving it for the people and moments that truly deserve it…for things we aspire to.

If we respect ordinary in the same way that we respect true brilliance, then what does that say of us?

Claiming Your Destiny

I’m really excited to be able to bring you something that is 2 years in the making. It’s a beautiful manual created from over 20 of my best posts from 2008-2010, and it’s called “Claiming Your Destiny,” because the topics within this first volume are my efforts to set the stage for your journey of turning dreams into reality.

The book was designed by my awesome graphic designer, Jana Rade, and contains a few of my favorite quotes on action and destiny.

It is my hope that these books become a regular series, and that I can use them to share my passion with the world. As such, there are 2 versions, one of which is free…no email required.

Feel free to share it with anyone that you think needs it. In fact, I’d be honored if you did.

Should you choose to support this website and buy the premium version, you’ll be rewarded with access to my new member’s area, which currently contains:

a 30 minute MP3 that fully details my guest posting strategy (how I got on Copyblogger, Problogger, DavidRisley.com, Twitip, etc)
a full audio version of the manual that includes a brief discussion about each and every post contained therein.

The price for that version, complete with a unique cover as proof of your support, is only 9.95.

You can buy the premium version here or download the free version here.

Beyond Blogging is now in Print

Lastly, I just want to share my excitement about the fact that my beloved project with Mike Cliffe-Jones, Beyond Blogging, has now gone mainstream. We were able to get it published (via CreateSpace) and listed on Amazon.com (soon to Barnes and Noble). We’ve already sold copies on several platforms and I can tell you that having a box of books with your own name on it is an incredible feeling. Here’s the video of our first copy coming in the mail.

  • Sure thing, catch me anytime :)
  • Brilliant to me is something that changes your day. I used the word 'brilliant' in the military, for instance when we had done a twenty miler, got to the end and an assualt course was waiting for us, 'brilliant' !

In todays society people expect more for nothing, Brilliant things can and do happen, but for me, if it changes my day in any way I would say it's brilliant.

    Good luck brother
  • Well, you're right that they can and do happen, but I think we disagree on the definition. I prefer to use this one: "Marked by unusual and impressive intellectual acuteness"

    Thanks for stopping by :)
  • See Nathan, that's why your so succesful, because you use big words that I have no idea what they mean! I'm a dumb ass you know that!
  • Nice work, Nathan. Happy to read so many personal favorites in your book. And congrats on the Amazon deal!
  • Looks like a great read Nathen, Keep up the great work. Glad I meet you.
  • Thanks man, same here!
  • I'm really, really impressed with the content and the design Nathan. I thought I knew all your work, but I guess I missed a lot along the way.

    Thanks!
  • Thanks Mike. I must admit, I was a bit nervous about the whole thing...being that a lot of the content is slightly personal in nature, but going through my old posts was a fun exercise. Now I need another 20 good ones for next year!
  • When thinking of the word, Brilliant, I think of the Guinness commercial with all the old classy guys saying "Brilliant!" over and over.

I do feel that we need to respect it and really offer more of an insightful comment. With that said, this is actually my first time coming to your blog Nathan and I really have enjoyed it thus far.

    Still exploring.
  • Totally forgot about those commercials! Funny, but another perfect example.

Thanks for hanging out Derek, hope to see you around more often :)
