Create a Big Money Project

Comments Off

Do you have what it takes?

One of the first steps to building up the confidence to step out on your own as a webrepreneur is to create a big money project so you can see what it feels like to watch your income grow on its own…outside of your job. The problem with this theory is that creating a big money project is not as easy as it sounds. Realistically, you cannot predict which of your products or services will be a success, nor can you predict which ones will be a failure. Sure, a PLF style launch can help you build enough buzz to sell a few copies of an eBook, but if people think your book is crap, it will stop selling.

The trick then, is to not only try to create a quality product and build buzz around it, but to create a product or service that sticks. The only way that you can do this is to start creating products. Don’t wait for the perfect idea to take you by storm, just get out there and do it.

You have to start somewhere

Sure, some of your projects will fail, but if you create enough of them you’ll find a few that work out well for you. Of those few, you’ll have one that exceeds expectations. Rather than let this product ride it out, you need to be spending a majority of your time developing that idea further. Find new ways to add to or improve that product. Create an updated version. Create a physical version. Turn it into a book series. Turn it into a lecture series. I think you get the point…your big money project could become a huge money project.

In the meantime, continue to spend the few free minutes you have to flesh out new ideas. Focus on a few to see which ones start taking root. I know it sounds strange, but you’ll be able to feel when a certain project becomes the new show in town. When it does, put the others in a box to save for later and start working on big money project #2. Wash…rinse…repeat. Soon, you’ll have enough money to fully fund your business.

1 idea vs 1,000

In the beginning of your journey, you will likely have so many ideas that you don’t know where to start. This is the fun of creating…once you’ve freed your mind to allow this process to begin, you’ll be flooded with ideas everywhere you go. Find a way to save them for later by using an online notebook and continue to reference them whenever you’ve run out of things to work on. Letting your ideas sit for a few days is a great way to gain perspective and it is a great way to save yourself from blowing a month’s worth of work by developing an idea that probably wasn’t the best in the first place (trust me, that’s how I started).

In the end, you’ll still need to run a great campaign, which means you’ll need great copy, great marketing, and a quality product. However, unless you actually start creating something you will continue to be stuck in limbo…reading blogs and dreaming about a day when your life will change. I know you’ve got a great product or service within you. People need things done. We need designers, copywriters, coders, and musicians. We need eBooks that teach us how to use social media for our business. We need weight loss guides and motivational speeches. You’ve just got to find what you are good at and start making it happen.

The “how to”

Now that you’ve got an idea, you need to find a way to create it. We’ll talk about that next time…

    Hi Nathan,

That is a big “push” … I have done just what your recommend in a very crowded arena and have plans to expand in the way you suggest and admit that I am quaking in my boots! It was another “push” that got me to get my product up – I was going to be a guest on a teleseminar talking about blogging for money and promised the host I would have a report to give to attendees which I then had to write and it turned out to be longer than a report – but a real ebook.

So, whatever the “push” I agree with you , just get a product of your own – if nothing else it will help build your online marketing muscles.

I know this post is about “The big project” but I would advise people who are starting out to go initially for small projects, like an information E Book.

Almost inevitably you’ll be disappointed with sales at first, unless you have huge traffic. But the great thing about these products is that they just carry on selling and selling, and that’s very encouraging. They give you a good base for when you’re ready for “The big one.”

Well Mike, I agree with you in part, but I think that if you look for affiliates or partners, you can turn any project into a winner provided it has great content. However, it can take time to find one that sticks.

The point I’m trying to make is that if you start creating, you’ll find one that works better than others. Not necessarily a big project, but one that consistently makes you money.

    Nathan,

A very successful entrepreneur recently told me, “If you don’t have a product and you are working on 7 products right now, drop 6 of them and finish your first product before you do anything else.” Since the first project is usually the toughest, that’s good advice.

Thanks for encouraging us to take action and get that first product done …so we can really crank out the subsequent products (and the eventual winners).

Jason, that is great advice. It is very easy to get distracted by ideas and dropping them all to get that first one finished is a huge step.
