Where We’re Going, We Don’t Need Roads [GCN-2]

Comments Off

I’m really excited about this journey, so much that my head is spinning with ideas and new things to share with you.

Our numbers are growing by the day, and that’s pretty cool. This isn’t about me, this is about us…our community.

I’m just trying to facilitate communication between a select few entrepreneurs, or as Seth says…”Linchpins.”

You are all linchpins, and together, we pretty much kick ass.

So what does this look like, this journey?

It starts with defining how and when we can change the game.

I have ideas, like:

  • Spending less time with freeloaders that don’t want to change and more time with the people that want to
  • Finding the people that need our help most…many of which can’t even use Google without help
  • Using profit to fund not fancy cars and expensive vacations (although that will come), but using it to fund even more innovation
  • Using our talents to the maximum capacity that our ability allows. You are all great bloggers, but I think there’s more to you than that.

How do we get the ball rolling fast enough so that it moves on its own?

I think it starts with the decision to be remarkable. It’s harder to be awesome, but it’s so much better…

For instance, I find it hard not to talk about the easy stuff, but there are already thousands of guys doing that and quite honestly, I’m not as good as them in that category. Where I excell is in motivation and teaching people how to level up.

It starts with a blog, but that’s just the beginning.

Each of you has a unique gift.

Some of you are technical masters.

Some of you are people persons.

Some of you are smarter than Einstein.

We’ve all got something to work with…the trick is combining it Voltron style.

My Strategy

I’m taking this off road. In fact, where we’re going…we don’t need roads.

We’re going sky high.

I’ve had thoughts of closing off half of each blog post. I’ve had thoughts of just giving every single damn bit of my knowledge away for free. I’ve even thought about quitting all together and focusing on the bigger game.

I had a talk with Chris Brogan about this recently, and he talked about the difference between small coins and the big ones. He talked about moving the bigger needles. I’m willing to risk my entire reputation and business on trying to move those needles.

I recently talked of writing a $5,000 E-Book, and although I’m not sure I’ll go that far, my plan is to release one for $500 that only 10 people get to buy. I can’t take credit for the idea (@julien), but I might take credit for trying it.

I’m going to release more and more content within this member’s area. Eventually, the price for admission will be much more than 9.95.

Quite honestly, I haven’t even told anyone how to get here, although I’ve started leaving crumbs (check my latest post to see if you can find it).

This is brand new baby…uncharted territory, and it’s a hell of a time.

The Meat

So I can’t really leave you unless I’ve given you something to do. Talking in riddles is great, but it’s not actionable.

I’d like you to do something…it’s not mandatory, but it might be fun.

Find a place on your blog to leave a crumb. It can be a symbol, a code word, or anything else you can think of. See who’s paying attention. See who’s really reading.

Work to segment your audience into true supporters and freeloaders. I know it sounds harsh, and I don’t intend it to, but that’s the first step in building an empire. You need knights, princes, and prophets if you want to build it.

Let’s see what happens.

    Nathan,

I'm one book behind, but I like where this is going.

Your first point about spending time with people who don't want to change really hit a nerve with me.

I like this. This is good.

It's natural to try and show people the light and force change…but the truth is that if people don't want to change then there's nothing you can do.

Nathan, I've actually “left crumbs” like you mention…they work :)

I love the “spending less time with freeloaders” stuff, which has to do with isolating the market of people you want to spend time serving.

My opinion, you publish “free content” on your blog, then also publish “halfs” which are protected with a message that reflects the main theme you want to portray for the community you're building here (i.e. let's change the online world etc…).

Good stuff Nathan, keep it up! :)

Sweet man…do you have any advice for others on how you've “left crumbs” and made it work?

I'm working on doing something similar to what you suggested, but I'm taking it slow because I want it to be just right.

    Thanks for joining us :)

Well, I've left crumbs much like you did in your blog post “I'm Taking The Gloves Off”…where you're setting the expectations and creating the atmosphere for the community you're building here.

I've participated in conversations out on the Web (in forums, on Twitter, other blogs etc…), and when appropriate (very key point) left the “crumbs” back to my coaching site or a blog post I had written that appropriately continues the discussion. When others find those same conversations (selecting your conversation is important too)…the same crumbs will always lead to the same path you've created.

I don't pay particular attention to SEO when doing this, I'm more looking to add value to a conversation (perhaps I should pay some attention to SEO sometimes, but I'm not strong in that area).

As I say repeatedly on my blog, “business is about people, people.” :)

There are certainly other ways to “leave crumbs” for sure, but that's one that has worked for me.
