Dreamin’ Like a Superstar

explore the moonEditors Note: This is a guest post by the very talented Fiona Verschoor, who blogs about language learning at BabyStepstoFluency.com. She’s one of the fabulous members here at NathanHangen.com and as you can tell from this post, is well on her way to creating a Kingdom of her own.

Are you a big dreamer? Or do you prefer to cower among the rest of us, doing what is needed to move forward but never truly making significant leaps?

So many people think that as long as they make progress that they are doing well.

But they get held up on routine, everyday tasks.

Or they think that posting weekly and releasing a product once in a while is enough.

Isn’t that enough?

No, of course it isn’t. What are you thinking?

What happened to dreaming big? “If you reach for the moon you’ll land among the stars”?

We all know of some big dreamers. Bill Gates. George Washington and his associates. The guy who invented the wheel.

Do you want to be at their level, or simply ‘good’? Do you want to truly be on the cutting edge of your field, or do you simply want to make do?

I’d go for dreaming big.

I have a secret to tell, however. I wasn’t always a big dreamer. I was well known for doing just enough to get by in high school. It’s why I almost didn’t graduate (but hey, that’s a different story).

It didn’t take me long to realize this really wasn’t the way to go.

In fact, it was harder being a reasonable dreamer and doing what I needed to get done than it was being a big dreamer.

Why? Reasonableness is what everyone aims for – everyone looks for achievable goals, applies for achievable jobs, aims for $1000 rather than $1,000,000 because it’s more achievable. Go ahead, people, do so. I don’t mind at all.

Why?

If everyone is so damn reasonable, I’ll have no competition at the top. I can achieve my big dreams by being unreasonable. Not only that, it’ll often be easier simply because I’d have no competition.

I’ll apply for the unreasonable jobs, because no one else is.

I’ll reach for $1,000,000 because no one else is (they have to give the money to someone, right?).

I’ll reach to be the top dog, because everyone else is fighting to work for the top dog.

So be reasonable, people. Dream small. Go ahead, I’ll be laughing at you at the finish line.

For the big dreamers out there

I am one of you now. I want to change the world. I want to help millions of people learn languages. I want to be an expert in more subjects than I can count.

A lot of my dreams can’t be accomplished in my lifetime (I think world domination is one of my more achievable dreams). Some require immense risks. And though I may not end up achieving all my dreams, I’ll still be at the cutting edge of my field and be teaching others to get to my point when I’m done dreaming.

Because I’ll land among the stars, even if I don’t reach the moon.

If I get to the stars, I definitely wouldn’t be complaining. Stars are pretty.

Believe it or not, I’ve been making much more progress since I’ve decided that I want to be a big dreamer. I go out and look for, and find, opportunities. It is easier to be creative. I am slowly achieving some of these big dreams, dreams that everyone told me I wouldn’t be able to achieve.

After all, I want to be making my own path, doing something no one has done before.

And, if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. Big deal. I learned, and I can educate others about what I learned and what did or did not work.

Isn’t dreaming big the way to go? I definitely think so.

So, are you reaching for the moon?

Are you dreaming big or not really dreaming at all?

Ahh – a world dominator after my own heart!

Great post, Fiona – but shhhh, don't give away the big secrets yet!? If everyone takes heed of your terrific advice, lifts their heads and starts eyeing off those sparkly little stars, we're actually going to have to lift our own game that little bit higher.

Hmmm..time to follow my own advice. ;)

    Hey Tracy –

Don't think we have anything to be afraid of… most people wouldn't know the truth if it came and hit them on the head. The few that actually go and do something about it are worthy enough. :)

Awesome message, and it's absolutely true – it's never crowded at the top. I'd even go one step further – become delusional !

It's the unreasonable people that change the world – Sanity is for the weak !

I so agree. I lost my sanity quite a while ago… not only is it easier to reach your goals, the people you don't like leave you alone too ;)

Great and inspiring post Fiona, makes me know that i'm on the right way. The next step is becoming a Believer. Believe (really) in our dreams, knowing that they'll come true.
    Have a nice weekend!

Hey Fiona–you are so right! There are millions of people who dream to work for 'the man' instead of dreaming to be 'the man.' If you dream big and work hard, you'll probably get where you're going!

    Hey Fiona,

What a great post! I really liked when you said “After all, I want to be making my own path, doing something no one has done before.”

Years ago, I use to work for the “Bell System” (phone company). They had a term they used called “pioneer”. It meant that you had been with the company for at least 20 years. Well, I was fairly young when I hit that milestone in my life, so I didn't want to be called a “pioneer.”

Call me vain, but I thought I meant that I was old.

Anyway, looking back today, I realize now that I was a “pioneer” and rightfully so!

Here is one of the defifintions of a “pioneer” one who is first or among the earliest in any field of inquiry, enterprise, or progress. I love it, because I can continue shooting for the moon and land among the stars. There is such clarity around the stars, I plan to see you there!

Losing your sanity is like cleaning your closet. You get rid of the clutter and you have so much more available space! Awesome!

I've always considered myself reasonable and modest in my goals.

Turns out it's just as hard (harder?) to achieve a reasonable goal as an unreasonable goal.

WOW! Fiona, is all I can say. This is tooo awesome. What a fantastic article. Very refreshing. You give me hope in an era where everyone is looking to the government to take care of them. For instance health care in America. My own Dad said that if he could do it over he would work for the government. I almost passed out. My Dad who was in business for himself most of his life and inspired me to do the same but because he did not end up rich has decided that if he could do it over he would work for the government. I am going to talk to him this summer when I go visit and let him know what a let down that comment was. I am certainly glad that our forefathers in America did not think this way or we may not have ever known what freedom was truly like. Now people want to destroy what they fought and died for and socialize our country. Sorry to go on so much but your article is just sooooo refreshing amongst so much negativity. Thanks again. I wish you the very best of luck and much success in your endeavors. Tony

You really inspired me, Fiona! I am one of the “Reasonableness” persons out there in the world but because of this blog you've made me thinking about things that I can do more in life. Yes, it's true that people want something that are achievable in life, in my point of view, I think it's easy to grab and their is no hard effort on achievable things. We all hope that we can all together can achieve our big dreams, Fiona. Thank you! :)
