Engagement is the Way

Comments Off

Never before in the history of the human race has there been such beautiful and glorious technology at our fingertips. Up until the past several decades, humans were forced to live primarily in isolation, relying on primitive systems to communicate.engage

However, with the advent of social media, the curse of isolation is broken and the human race can finally come together as one.

One industry.

One niche.

One product.

Social media is a godsend…it is a chance to be reborn as what you were meant to be.

With Facebook comes the power to find people where they play.

With Twitter comes the power to find and engage anyone that might have something you want.

With blogs, more specifically, blog comments, comes the power to build a following far beyond your wildest dreams.

Simply put…social media gives you the power of engagement. Engagement gives you the power to build a cult following of people that worship the ground you walk on.

Engagement is your bunker…your parapet…the rallying cry that you can use to protect yourself from any message you send, regardless of the intention.

With the advent of social media, you have the power of engagement, and it’s the most powerful ability you have.

The Way of Engagement

Respond to every comment.

Reply to every Tweet.

Follow people for the sole purpose of getting them to follow you.

These are the rules of engagement.

Marketing, especially when cleverly disguised as engagement, is the key to unlock both power and riches.

Through engagement, you build a following that is interested in your message.

Through continued engagement, this audience becomes the engagers, and starts to spread your message for you.

Should all go well, you’ll quickly have a following that is ready and willing to buy anything you sell, regardless of its quality or price. Fancy names do well here, as do pretty packages.

If, for some reason, you find that people aren’t buying, perhaps it’s time to examine your level of online engagement.

Are you spending enough time on Twitter making friends? Are you doing your part to make people feel special…like you care?

Build a Tribe

Does your tribe have an exclusionary language of its own?

Do you use fancy hashtags to host online Twitter chats?

Do you use video to show yourself as a real person; one that your audience can identify with?

Do you make use of clever branding tactics to make yourself cool…one of the big kids?

Be Someone to Emulate

Talk about how often you engage. Brag about it.

Share your awesomeness with the world.

“I engage!”

It’s not good enough to do it…you also have to talk about it so that your audience…your tribe…has someone they can emulate.

Exploit relationships to the fullest, and all of your customers will fall before you.

There is No Other Way

Engagement is the purpose and social media is the engine that drives it.

Engagement isn’t a privilege, it’s a duty.

It is by performing this duty that you have the right to make money and to build an audience. Anything else is secondary.

If you aren’t fulfilling your duty, then someone else will.

Funny how your satire is an actual message being peddled on the streets of blogdom.

as I was reading this, I thought, OMG THE WORLD IS ENDING.

I quoted Ayn Rand in my post today (favourably!!!) and Nathan is beating the drum of engagement. I had better go stock up on water, canned goods and blankets because some sort of cataclysmic event is nigh.

(you and MCJ are so subversive.)

But here's the deal: LOTS of people DO want the the traffic, and if that's what you want, then commenting and engagement is a good way to go out and get it.

And I like being able to go get what I want. Action is HAWT.

But traffic does not necessarily = sales, which is a problem if you want to make a living.

(I do believe THIS is the drum you two are *really* beating).

HOWEVER, I *do* get business, referrals and sales from Twitter and Facebook, because, as any old-school in-real-life salesperson will tell you, sales is about the relationship. It is way easier to close the deal when someone knows you and likes you and *wants* to work with you.

This is how Twitter works for me: I hang out. It is a cocktail party. I get silly and I talk to people. I make friends. (For real – I have deep and meaningful IRL friendships that started on Twitter.) And then, 3 or 4 or 8 months down the road, when someone needs a writer or help with writing, they think, hey I know this chick from Twitter who does that…

and: referral. Or sale. Or gig.

So engagement works, but it is the long-game.

And…I'd do it anyway. Because it is fun and friendly and I loooooove it.

ps. nice satire. Liked it lots.

Sweet, sarcasm! :) Although I firmly believe engaging is what makes the blogging world go round, hat's off for making it seem almost dirty! I think I need a shower now, after all that relationship making I've been a doin'. lol

Personally I see nothing wrong with engaging people, if you're in it to win it. Marketing 101, fostering 'relationships' creates sales. People are more inclined to buy things from people they know, like, and trust. And if you're online to make money, then you better know how to market, regardless of what kind of 'marketing principles' you might subscribe to.

But I'm not interested in fostering a relationship just because I want you to buy my shite or hire me. I want a relationship because we've got things in common, because I've said something that resonates with you, and because your funny and/or cool..preferably both… and if it leads to you throwing business my way later down the road..then ha! All part of my evil little plan! ;) Icing on the cake if you will.

Look like lots of folks see this post from you as sarcasm. Now, I haven't been following this blog for long, so I'm not sure.

I actually tend to agree….engage your readers/viewers, or somebody else will. I think the cool thing that I see happening is that as I engage people more, I actually learn to care about them, and their interests more, also.

Maybe I've missed something in another post, or just missed the boat. Not sure, but I like the community stuff.

Thanks! PS – Beyond Blogging is such a great read. I haven't put it down yet! I def recommend it to anyone thinking about it here.
