Get it Out
Blogging is a slippery slope for those of us that live in the world of self expression but don’t like to get tied to long-term commitments. When I first decided to start blogging, I just wanted to share the interesting things that I found online or while going about my daily business. I didn’t think that I would share my innermost desires, nor my deepest thoughts and emotions. But once I started writing for you, I found that sometimes…it just feels good to let it all out. Even if no one read my blog, I would still feel the need to share my thoughts with the dead space that my blog would occupy. I’ve used journals in the past, but for some reason I felt like it wasn’t enough…I needed to release my ideas beyond my own grasp. I needed to let them go.
This is what blogging is all about isn’t it? I mean, where else can you share your thoughts with the world and feel the dread of worrying about people thinking you are crazy, but quietly hoping that they love you. Where else can you open up without having to leave the comfort of your own home? I find the journey from thought to publishing a remarkably intimate one and although I have second thoughts every time I hit “publish,”there is a sense of liberation that occurs when I do.
People like me are scared to say what they think. We’re so used to hearing what we think people want to hear that we never really voice our disagreement. Walking through the streets, in the local pubs, and in the local crowds, I get a sense that everyone is waiting to be freed. I know I was…but it took people like Chris Guillebeau, Ed Dale, and Gary Vaynerchuk to get me to shed my protective layer and share my voice with the world. Surely I can’t be the only one that has something to say. Most of us think it, but we never let it out…we never let it loose.
I’ve found that although I feel embarrassed or crazy from time to time, there is a meditative and medicinal feeling that comes from speaking my mind. You can sense it from others as well when they light a spark that lights up the world. There are innovators and game changers alll across the globe…they inspire us to take action. Many times, its the action that we’ve wanted to take for a long time, but we needed to hear that it is OK.
We’ve only got a few years on this lovely planet, so why let anyone get in the way? I’m 30 years old and I can already hear the doomsday clock ticking in the background…I’ve got so much to say and so little time to do it. I waited too long…I let my fears hold me back.
The reality is that even if people tell you that you suck or that your ideas are lame…they are probably lying. At worst, your ideas only matter to you, but that’s enough isn’t it? With enough passion and willpower, you can make anything happen that you want. You can feed the hungry, you can provide shelter to the homeless. Your art speaks of passion, your music of love. There is an army waiting for you to rise up and take control, but you have to have the courage and motivation to do it.
Don’t die with your music still inside of you…let it be heard. We’ve all got something great to say, I’m looking forward to hearing it.
