How to Be Like Batman

Most superheroes are lame. They wear silly outfits, have terrible social lives, and frequently suffer with bouts of self-doubt and relationship problems. Batman, on the other hand, is a total badass. He parties by day and fights crime by night. He doesn’t have any natural ability like super human strength or lightning speed, but he’s still able to conquer the streets of Gotham City. He’s also wealthy, thanks in part to his business sense and the people on his cast. Sure, he deals with some minor psychological issue, but hey, don’t we all?

You might wonder how he does it, but rather than tell you about him, I’d like to tell you how you can be like him, as a blogger no less.

1. Develop a Trusted Inner Circle

If you want to fight crime, you’ll need some help. You just can’t go out and recruit anyone, you need to choose your circle wisely.  For Batman, there’s Alfred (the butler), Lucius (the business manager and gear expert), and Robin (the trusted sidekick). All of these people act as trusted advisers and confidants to Batman, meaning that he can trust them with all of the family secrets.

In your case, you can do the same by recruiting fellow bloggers to form a mastermind group, one in which you can be completely and brutally honest with each other. You need to be able to share your deepest business secrets with your alliance so that you can get an honest opinion from an outsider’s perspective. Without a team, you are going to spend too much time inside of your own head, which isn’t healthy and will weaken your efforts as a superhero. Batman may do all the ass kicking, but he couldn’t do it without his team.

2. Use Technology to Your Advantage

Batman doesn’t have a superpower, but he doesn’t make excuses…he’s got work to do. To overcome his shortcomings, he employs technology that can make him faster, smarter, and stronger. He’s got more tools in his arsenal than Ironman, and he’s not afraid to use them.

The same should hold true for you. There is technology that can help you understand your traffic, improve your SEO, and spread your message to as many eyes as possible. Learn it, love it, use it. Just off the top of my head, there’s:

Google analytics
SEOBook (great plugins)
Yahoo Pipes
Twitterfeed
Social Networks
Podcasting and Video
Posterous

That’s just getting started. The point I’m trying to make here is that as a blogger, you need to understand the tools of the trade. Sure, you could go without them, but your potential is so much greater if you make the most of your time by learning the in’s and out’s of the technology that exists to help you. Unfortunately, I don’t have an example of bulletproof armor, but I’m working on it :)

3. Do What Others Won’t

Batman does what everyone else in Gotham city either can’t do or is afraid to do. He’s not afraid to stand up to the toughest criminals or to take on a room full of lunatics. He does what the police don’t have the power to do, while still allowing them to take credit. Batman is the epitome of a servant to society. He works tirelessly to help others without asking for a single thing in return.

You can probably see where this is going, but I can’t drive this point home hard enough. If you want to be a superhero, you’ve got to raise other people up. You have to give without expecting anything in return. As a Webrepreneur, it might sound counter-intuitive, but the truth is that if you help others, they will come back to lift you up in return. There’s too much free content out there to try and compete on reputation alone. That’s why you need to give consistently, whether with communication, content, or expertise.

You can also think of this in terms of competition. You can either see competition as something to be feared, or an awesome challenge. Don’t shy away from taking on your biggest competitor, but when you beat them it’s important to remain humble. The recognition isn’t what matters…it’s the fact that no one else can do what you do. Embrace it.

4. Own the Night

Batman lives a double life. He’s got the Bruce Wayne thing going on during the day, during which time he takes care of the mundane and the necessary, like a day job or hanging with the family. This is his healing time. However, when it comes to the hours of darkness, no one owns the streets like Batman. The guy is tireless…he never sleeps. He is out when only the bad guys (competition) are.

This is where you have the chance to segment your life and create a business on the side. You can either complain about your day job and having too many responsibilities at home, or you can do what must be done during the day and then bust your ass at night. Will you be tired? Of course, but nothing great was ever gained without sacrifice. You are owning the night now so that you can quit your job and spend more time with your family.  You are instilling a work ethic in your children and showing them how dreams can be accomplished.

Don’t allow yourself to use being tired as an excuse. We’ve all got an extra hour or two each evening which we can use to build a business. It also goes without being said that if you are doing what you love, then it really isn’t work anyway, so what’s the problem? Stay up late, get up early, and be a pillar among the darkness. You own the night.

5. Get Back Up

Here’s the deal, you are going to fail. I’ve failed hundreds of times (lost count after that), and unless you are lucky, you probably will as well. Batman can either lay down and die, or get back up and fight. We’ve all got to get back up.

10 years ago, I took failure personally and I used it as an excuse to sit and sulk. It took me another 5 years to realize how to get back up again. I’m convinced that the difference between the people that live their dreams and the people that do not is the inability to get up after being knocked down. Don’t get beaten into submission by the gatekeepers and boundaries that hold you back. Keep fighting, keep pushing through. If you’ve faced failure before, then you know what it feels like. You also know that the feeling doesn’t last forever. Redirect that energy and keep dominating.

Now you have no excuse not to be a superhero. While I’ll stop short of asking you to wear a costume, when you do work to build your business, think of yourself as a game changer. You are awesome and you can build a lifestyle business. Don’t look at the journey as a long road, take it one step at a time. I’ll be out this evening, will I see you there?

  • Nice post. I never thought of myself as batman, but no doubt there are similarities. Point #5 is my favorite. If youre not failing youre not pushing hard enough. You must fail in order to succeed. Thx for the entertaining take on the whole thing.
  • That might be my favorite too. Lots of people just don't want to do the hard work. I plan on hammering that one for a few more posts.
  • Great analogy Nathan! I have a horrible feeling this makes me Alfred! At least my English accent is real!
  • haha that it is Mike.
  • Does this mean I have to wear my underpants on the outside? Seriously, excellent post with some valid corollaries.
  • Only if you wear pink :)

    Thanks Kevin.
  • There was something very inspiration about this post. I liked the analogy (who doesn't want to be Batman, right?) and I liked how you added you personal experiences into the mix. All that equals into very useful advice and a great post!

Oh, and my bat-senses tell this is related to the Chris Brogan's overnight success challenge, which makes it even more interesting :)
  • You've got great senses :)

Glad you liked the post...when I had the idea, I wasn't sure how it would turn out...glad the response has been positive!
  • The bullet proof example for technology could be your WP anti-spam and security plugins. :)
  • Darn! Touche :)
  • I would love to try sit in the batmobile for a change. ^^ I'm actually visualize the whole post between blogging and batman back and fro, can't say I'm not enjoying that. I would love to have some technology upgrades for my current working status. To own the night, you must have the right gear. Appreciate the nice post, Nathan.

  • I forgot all about the batmobile! I'll have to try and work that one in another post :)
  • Love this, it's great!

Ties in exactly with how I feel you should approach projects and life in general. Find that time, squeeze that extra half-hour, seek the unusual. Get knocked down and embrace the experience. When you fail, rinse that failure for all the information you can. It will help in the long run. This applies to everything in life, not just blogging.

Personally, I find the concept of the 'dual' existence you allude to in this post, fascinating and very alluring. For those of us working a job alongside a blog, this becomes a real possibility with the diligent application of effort.

And how else, other than through concerted, prolonged effort, are we going to become renaissance men and women?
  • Great comment Time. You're right...that's the part that keeps me living, knowing that when the darkness comes, I get to put on a mask and start whooping some ass :)
  • Batman is my favorite for many of the reasons you mentioned, so this really spoke to me.

What I like most about Batman (at least as portrayed in Batman Begins) is that he faced and conquered his fear, and I think that's a big part of what you're talking about here, especially as it relates to dealing with failure.
  • Absolutely, and that's why he's my favorite as well. I also like the fact that he doesn't ask for praise or to be thanked, he just does it because it's what needs to be done.
  • I am batwoman! Cool. Great lessons here with a humorous tie in.
  • I have to agree with Rich, it's the getting up and moving on that is the difference. Really liking the game changer or make your own game as your blog title embodies. However, I have to say my favorite part is the selfless service that you point out. I see this trait coming on strong in blogging and social media circles today. I've placed you into my superheros category on twitter so I'll be looking for more great stuff - thanks for the post.
  • Thanks Scott...hope I can keep it coming!
  • awesome post Nathan, thanks for drawing my attention to it - perfect analogy (though perhaps unexpected for some - crime-fighting being a bit more 'glamorous' than blogging most of the time - though perhaps we need to change that!) and nicely dug-into. Agree with Rich Lazzara above - point 5 is probably the most important and hardest for people to get around. Nice wrap-up too!

I'm working hard - have been for quite a while - understand many of the tools - but I still don't have the "key" - there is something I'm missing and I have no idea what - blind, I guess.
  • What's your URL?
  • Guest
www.wizetime.com - why do you ask
  • Just wanted to take a look for you.

Your site is about time management, but it's busy, which is kind of the opposite effect of what you want. I'd work on tweaking your design a bit and making things a bit more simplistic. I think that will help.

Your comments are interesting because during all the time I've been studying
blogging, I've been told that I have to have all these things on my site in
one form or another - they say that these things drive traffic - so far I've
had very little traffic and yet most of the time I'm writing nearly every
day and I have SEO plugin, Share plugin, Twitter plugin and a host of other
plugins which have all been recommended including the latest one WP-Marketer
    - I can't put my own image in this design which is unfortunate and I hadn't
anticipated that when I came into this one - it had 3 columns which is what
I wanted. I have signed up for affiliates but I don't put them on my site
because there is no traffic. I've done a lot of the things people say to do
to get traffic but nothing has worked - the hours and hours and hours I've
spent on this for no results is astounding -

Thanks for your input - I'll see what I can do to simplify the look - and
put some of the widgets and plugins elsewhere on the site -
  • Having share buttons is great...keep those. It's really all about branding. Find a way to stand out and build your blog to look like your message. Keep up the good work!
  • Well said Nathan, love the analogy. Always loved Batman, now I know why... ;)

Tip: Please separate 'Podcasting and Video' into their own categories, respectively. Podcasting and Video are two completely opposite things. Sure the video part may blend, but that part is covered under the 'podcasting' category.

I'd also love to introduce you to my audience. I know they would love the information you have. How does an interview sound?
  • Well, although they were placed together in this instance for the sake of brevity, I'm not so sure they are entirely different. That would depend on the audience and the intent of the content.

While I get what you're saying, I think there is a large group of internet users that wouldn't know podcasting from email, so I'm trying to slowly bridge that gap.

And yes, Batman is awesome...my favorite part about this post is seeing everyone else come out of hiding and admit the same...I was worried I'd be the only one ;)

Yeah, let's work something out. Hit me up on Twitter (@nhangen) or use the contact form up top to get me.

    Thanks for stopping by!

    Nathan
  • True. Might as well make sure they have the understanding down pat before another curveball is thrown at em. ;)

Nah, you're not the only one. I've actually associated myself more with Batman than any other character when I was younger.
  • deborahmichele
Nice post - it's nice to remember that even Batman failed sometimes and that getting back up and fighting again is part of the journey.
