Being yourself is extremely important. The hard thing about that is we learn by modeling, so sometimes we have an "identity crisis" so to speak. I always feel it, but sometimes it takes time to recover. With practice though, we can hone our own voice and show it off loud and proud.

As for social media, you're right on. Anyone can label themselves a social media expert (many have), but it's really just common sense.

Funny that you mention that about this post as it is begging for a touch up. It still gets a ton of traffic too, so I guess I should update it :)

These days, it's hard to argue with Twitter being #1 by far. I'm working on Facebook with some results, but not nearly as well as on Twitter. Stumble, Digg, Reddit, Delicious, etc...they are all nice, but since Twitter has exploded I don't use them nearly as often.

The next wave will be a video explosion and YouTube will blow up once more. Look out for Ustream and Twitter video services too.

Hey Nathan,

An effective way to make the web work for you is to be yourself online. Be no different from how you act in the real world.

Some people think that social media tools on the internet have their own rules. That they need to game it or use it a certain way. But what they fail to realize is that the digital world is just an extension of the real one. You act the same anywhere, whether in public, at a friend's house, or online. In other words, if you're wondering how you should "use" an online tool, just be yourself.

"Social media expert" is the same as saying "real world relationship expert" :) . Technically you could be, but relationships are a pretty organic thing that's unique for each person.

On another note, more than a year has passed since you originally wrote this article. Twitter has exploded; StumbleUpon stayed the same. Which "web 2.0" tools do you see as most effective today?

Best,
Oleg
