How to JV Your Way to Success

Comments Off

digital empire video

OK, first let me start by saying that a JV for me isn’t the same as it is for others.

It’s not swapping promo emails for a product.

It’s not become an affiliate.

It’s finding talent, recruiting talent, and partnering with talent in order to leverage talent.

As you can see…my talent is talking about talent.

A long time ago, I thought I could become successful on my own. Do all of my own design, coding, installation, tech support, customer service, product creation, and marketing.

Let’s just say it didn’t work out too well.

The problem I found was that I was finding talent and then trying to compete with it. It wasn’t until years later that I realized my mistake and found that if I focused on working with talent instead of against it, I could not only achieve much more, but have a lot of fun in the process.

I’m a hopeless aspiring musician, and I can’t do much more than write songs on paper. However, Oleg Mokhov eats music for breakfast. Instead of trying to labor away and figure out how to compete with his talent, I partnered with him so that we could combine talents Voltron style.

Now, I’m in the music business, and I’ve got a new product that’s original and fresh.

The same goes with myself and Rich Lazzara, who is the Vice-President of a yacht company. He sells million dollar yachts to entrepreneurs…what a gig right?
I bet he knows a thing or two about what a business owner wants and how to get it to them. Bam! Another partnership.

You all know the story of Mike CJ and I teaming up like Batman and Robin (I’m Batman) to create Beyond Blogging and the recently formed Beyond Blogging Project.

I don’t even remember how we met, but I remember that he stood out. Next thing you know…a soon to be six-figure corporation is in the works. Pretty snazzy right?

Leveraging Time

I can’t do it all, and I stopped trying to long ago. Now, instead of spending 4 hours designing a logo, I pay $20 to my pal Dean to do it for me. It is quicker, and more efficient. I can make much more than twenty bucks in 4 hours, so to me, it’s time spent.

In a way, I consider that JV work too, because even though I haven’t partnered with any of my designers, writers (for niche sites), or other freelancers, I still consider them a talented team from which I can recruit at any time. Money for them, and time for me. Win-win.

Leveling Up

You can’t build an empire if you’re the one building the castle, so it’s important that you find a way to focus on the more important things, such as the planning and development.

Hire builders to do that work for you so that you can focus on the big picture.

It’s easy to get caught up in the day to day grind, but you have to liberate yourself from it, and partnering with people is a great way to do that.

Each platform you build is bigger than the last, and as you build more, you’ll have a greater pool of assets from which you can draw from.

Eventually, you either get to a place that makes you happy, or you hire someone to run the empire so you can spend your days on the beach in Cabo, sipping on Margaritas.

If that doesn’t get you excited, then I don’t know what will.

Fun stuff as always Nathan. I've a ways to go getting comfortable with that aspect of all this, but I'm beginning to get it…

Wise, short and concise post Nathan. Congratulations. I try to do something that i call “my chain of relations”. Some of the services i offer are enriched by the services of my fellows. We help each other and everybody does his part. Sometimes they assist me, sometimes i assist them. Win-Win as you said.

    Nice work, Nathan

Seems like you are building your own digital empire after all.
I also tried to do everything myself, but despite my megalomania I had to admit that my
coding skills weren't going to rock anyone's world – so I hired a programmer who did the coding. In fact, a true emperor doesn't do anything by himself – he commands his legions of minions.

Mmm, I'm also thinking about team working. I haven't found the right one yet, and my blog is fairly new.

    BTW – Mike = Robin ? I feel sorry already !

    Nathan,
Truly fitting post for all of us! I'm a member of a group (The Freelance Exchange of Kansas City), and I always try and find ways to partner with others for not only my own benefit, but to benefit my clients. Designers, photographers, even other copywriters with strengths in other areas — they all add value to my services and give me the chance to focus on my strengths. It's a win-win for everyone.
    Keep the great posts coming!
    Jill

I'm in love with the idea in principle, as I'm coming to terms with my current inability to do all the things I want to do for my blog, but am a little away from it in practice. Working on it, working on it…

Can we have a photo of you & Mike in your suits?

You're absolutely right about the way JVing seems to give a project much more than the sum total of the talents involved.

The hidden benefit is having someone on whom you rely and who relies on you – that keeps you going when things are tough, provides motivation when needed, offers advice, brings you up when you're down. It's a huge benefit.

I'm not too pissed about being Robin – after all he's younger and better looking than Batman. But I always saw myself as Jean Luc Picard and you as Data, in our quest to go where no blogger has gone before…….

You can't build an empire if you are the one building the castle.

That is a powerful statement to live by. I think it is good to first understand how a castle is built though

right now I am doing all the dirty work so I know what works and what doesn't, once I fully understand then I will start leveraging

    great post!

I dig the 'can't build an empire if you are the one building the castle'. Knowing the value of our time is so critical to determining the difference between doing and delegating.

I do think that early on though most adventurous people will still try to have a go themselves at most tasks. The beauty of this is that it while learning the task you get a better understanding of the value of it if you want to delegate later on. More importantly trying for yourself once or twice helps you see what the key inputs are so that you can set up and monitor the task properly when you delegate.

Keep up the good work Nathan.

I've recently had my come-to-senses moment and realize that I was taking on far too much stuff, trying to do most myself. Even though I knew better in my mind, I still got caught up, and the result is that I am not where I feel I should be. but that's all behind me now, it's a new day.

The laser is now locked on product creation and things that directly benefit the business side of the house. JVing and knowing when to outsource is the smart thing to do. It comes down to what gives you the best return for your time investment.

I couldn't agree more Nathan, I have partnered with Nick (sitesketch101) on a fairly large project that actually has nothing to do with the blogging niche, and everything to do with actually making money!

I see it everyday, people want to make it in this industry (internet marketing) but they want to do it all themselves, and spend no money doing it. Is that possible? Sure, but so is getting struck by lightning, or winning the lottery!

I prefer to control my destiny by acting NOW!

    Nathan,

You know how I feel about Joint ventures :) . Considering my entire platform for BlogcastFM is built on partnering with other people. Without the interviewees we'd have nothing. But, I can easily tell you it would not be going nearly as well as it is if I didn't have Sid partnering with me on alot of technical and marketing components. I'm a relationship, marketing and idea guy. I'm the big picture thinker and he's able to see the subtle nuances and details that push things over the edge.

I once even said the blogging is a team sport. I think we're going to see more and more collaboration across the blogosphere and the key to true success is collaboration with complementary products and services. Let's just take an example from a tangible product (I know sounds insane ;) ). I'm meeting with the owner of a restaurant chain today who wants to build out a fan base on Facebook Twitter. So, if you think about it there are a number of complementary things that go along with eating at a restaurant, like drinks. So I recommended finding an alcohol manufacturer with a larger fan base and sponsoring a giveaway through their fan base. The thing is that both parties benefit from this situation. It's an idea that I've been toying with called incentivizing promotion at every touch point. I could write an entire blog post in response to this post :)

I spent 2 years figuring out html, css, wordpress, photoshop, logo design, branding, twitter, facebook.. the whole deal. This means I know what to do but cannot do it! I'm an organizer, a manager, a quality control and details person. I'm not a programmer, designer or writer. So I want to hire others to do the createive work.

My business is to build websites based on seo and awesome copywriting from the start. It is a fully integrated package. Now that I'm ready to start, I definitely want to use people more talented than I.

I've already found an seo partner and copywriting partner. They are “white label” partners. I'm not in direct competition with them, and I can mark up their prices substantially. But the designers I want to work with do not have room for me to mark up their prices.

I want to make money at every turn, but it seems I cannot with the designers I have chosen.

Any input on working with others where there's not monetary profit for you?

Excellent Nathan. As I partner with fellow entrepreneurs life becomes easier for me. It's almost like Napoleon Hill's mastermind alliance. If you don't know how to do something one of your partners does. This is the ultimate form of leveraging.

    Hi Mike,
<benefit is having someone on whom you rely and who relies on you

That’s it in a nutshell. Most people who approach me take the short term view, e.g. they want to use my sites to build backlinks but little else.

They don’t take a long term view and try to ‘cultivate’ a relationship.

Love the JL Picard idea. Perception is everything, isn’t it!

  • http://www.thesaleslion.com/ Marcus Sheridan,The Sales Lion

Pretty new to your blog Nathan, but really diggin your style. You say it like it is, you say it like you feel, and that's the only language in my book. Good stuff bro.

  • http://pinartarhan.com/blog/ pinar

Loved it. I have that bug thogh- trying to be everything myself. So I wish I didn't have to do everything myself. Right now though I kind of have to. I don't have endless time but still I have more time than cash. So…

hopefully, one day I will just be the writer.

  • http://nathanhangen.com/blog Nathan Hangen

It's hard to shed that skin…but once you do two things happen:

    1) You feel so relieved at not having to be perfect at everything, and can use that to your advantage.

    2) You realize that now you have to make good use of your time, so it's a productivity bonus.

  • http://nathanhangen.com/blog Nathan Hangen

Thanks Marcus, and welcome to the empire. We like to keep it real here…no other way to educate and/or do business. I don't think there is enough of that.

  • http://nathanhangen.com/blog Nathan Hangen

I wish I could figure all those things out…still working on css and php…not doing well. It's just too much to manage, and it leads me to become distracted and overwhelmed.

Having white label partners is a great way to do things…you have assets, why not use them to your advantage?

As for working without profit…I'm a firm believer that what goes around comes around. Eventually it will all even out.

  • http://nathanhangen.com/blog Nathan Hangen

Blogging is a team sport…love that.

Too many try to not only do it alone, but become THE voice, and I think that's a bad way to do things.

I like what you're doing with social media…that's some high level stuff right there.

  • http://nathanhangen.com/blog Nathan Hangen

haha, I think you have a better chance to get struck by lightning than to win the lottery, but either way I prefer good odds, and like you…stop waiting and start creating my own lightning :)

  • http://nathanhangen.com/blog Nathan Hangen

It's hard, because you want to be efficient and productive at the same time. If you can make $50/hour doing something else, why not pay $20-$30 for everything else?

  • http://nathanhangen.com/blog Nathan Hangen

Dirty work now = big time payoff later.

  • http://nathanhangen.com/blog Nathan Hangen

It's hard, but it's worth it. Just takes confidence and belief.

I'll get my batman costume out, but I'm not sure Mike can fit into his Robin suit…he's an old man after all.

  • http://nathanhangen.com/blog Nathan Hangen

It not only frees up your time, but benefits the entire industry. Well said.

  • nathonhay

What goes around comes around. Yes. They are actively seeking clients for themselves. I'd make a perfect seo partner.
