Live from Doha
A Brief Pause in the Action

If you haven’t noticed, my posting has slowed down over the past few weeks and I haven’t offered an update in the past 7-10 days. I want to address not only where I’ve been, but also share some observations from a different part of the world that I’ve been fortunate enough to experience. As part of a military course and as a chance to catch some R&R, I was offered an opportunity to visit Doha, Qatar. Over the past week, I’ve been traveling through parts of a city I’d probably have never known about had it not been for me serving in the military.
Although I have spent several months in Afghanistan, this is my first visit to a modern and thriving Muslim country. My first impression was that Qatar resembles parts of California, but it really reminds me of a desert-style Florida. The terrain is beautiful and the air is much cleaner than I’ve been used to over the past few months, which has been a welcome change.
Inside the city, I was overwhelmed by the beautiful architecture and stunning night-life. The city is alive with shops and traffic, so much that it reminded me of an Orlando/Vegas hybrid. However, the buildings remind me of Italian or Spanish style villas. It didn’t take long for me to get caught up in the energy of Qatar and start feeling like I was lost inside of a dream world. The experience was a wonderful relief and I would not hesitate to visit again.
Of course, I picked up several trinkets worthy of a tourist shopping spree, but what I think I will really take from Qatar is a perspective I’d never have obtained in the U.S. alone. I realized how closed off we are from the rest of the world, and how important it is to expand your horizons.
This deployment, although stressful and at some times difficult, has been a blessing in disguise. I hope that over time, I can continue to evolve and that it becomes evident in my work and in my writing. Thanks for being patient, and stay tuned for a return to your regular broadcast.
