Nothing is Impossible – How to Turns Dreams into Reality

You know, it’s funny…looking back to my childhood and remembering how many people used to tell me to have reasonable expectations.

When I was younger, people thought it was cute that I wanted to be an astronaut or a fighter pilot, but as I got older, people got tired of humoring me. Soon, it wasn’t cute anymore and somehow, my dreams started annoying people.

Just the mere confidence that I could achieve anything was like blasphemy to many friends and family members. Adults kept telling me to grow up, but I didn’t want to…and it cost me.

The First Lesson

Eventually, I let them beat me down, and I gave up dreaming. I’m not sure exactly when it happened, but it happened nonetheless. I started thinking about what it would be like to just accept being “normal” and to be happy giving up on what I wanted. Somehow, I found a way to make it OK.

Since then, my journey has been full of ups and downs, and it has left me more resilient and determined, but all that was in spite of giving up.

If you are a dreamer, people will try to convince you to quit…to give up on your dreams. They’ll try and call you out, as if you’re strange…make you an outcast.

Funny how that works isn’t it?

Don’t let them do it though…don’t let them get you down. It was 10 good years before I finally bounced back…don’t make the same mistake I did.

You Really Can Have It All

These days, I’m a different person. Although I dream big, I back up my dreams with action and belief. In that sense, they aren’t dreams, but goals…objectives.

Because of this…the way in which I put faith in both myself and my potential…I refuse to believe in “being reasonable.” I’m only here once, what’s the point in being scared?

Being reasonable sounds like an excuse…giving yourself a way out before you even begin. At that point, you’ve already failed yourself. If you don’t buy in, 100% with conviction, then you can’t make it.

But, if you do buy in and invest your heart and soul into achieving something, then I believe you can accomplish anything you want.

Keep in mind, that sometimes, what we think we want isn’t really what we want. You might find that the action required to accomplish something might not be worth the reward, but at least you’ll know and can move on.

My Experience

That’s how I decided I wouldn’t become a rock star, or an ultrarunner, or a professional bodybuilder, or a variety of other things I thought I wanted to be. However, it was through that process that I found that being a triathlete would be an amazing journey.

I found that being a Soldier would be more than I ever thought it would be.

How You Can Make it Happen

The difference between having dreams and having goals is a matter of

1. Creating a plan
2. Taking action

It’s no more difficult than that. I don’t care if you want 10 million dollars, want to backpack through Europe, or simply want to retire on a big piece of land under the open sky…you can have it if you plan for it.

Some of you know what I’m talking about it. You can see your future already…you visualize it. You live, eat, and breathe it on a daily basis. You can “feel it.”
To those of you that don’t believe me, or want to but can’t, I say this:

If you don’t believe in yourself, then who else will? It all starts with you, and as George Eliot said: ” It’s never too late to be who you might have been.”
Instead of thinking in terms of limitations, think in terms of expectations…of yourself and of the world. I promise that if you make that 1 simple change, then the world will be yours for the taking.

An Aside

Now, I know this is a bit philosophical and more grounded in opinion than fact, but being that we’re approaching a new year and that so many people are trying to find a new way ahead, I thought it would be poignant.

Make 2010 the year you make it happen.

Mandatory Beyond Blogging Mention

Of course, if you really want to start the year off right, you need a great resource to get you headed in the right direction. I’ve co-authored a book that I believe will help you do that. It’s called Beyond Blogging, and it’s going to be released very soon.

My co-author and I recently created a video in which we talk about the history of the project, what it’s like co-authoring a book from across the world, and what it’s like learning from 15 A-List bloggers. Check it out here.

  • I love to spend time either with people who dream as big as me or people who have already made it and that I can learn form. OK, maybe the ones who made it aren't my friends- but who cares? They are my mentors and my inspirations, even if they don't know it.
I can't be a rockstar because well I am tone-deaf and my voice sucks (otherwise I think I'd have tried. And people thought you were unrealistic?:) ) But I can write. I love it. I have been writing since I was 9 and there is nothing that makes me happier. So, I will fight and I will eventually make my dreams come true. Because I believe in me, even when no one else does. And that's what matters...
  • that's what I like to hear. It starts with you :)
  • "nothing is impossible"? No, I don't thing so :)
  • I can really connect with this, Nathan. Great post!
  • Thanks Anne!
  • Awesome post, bang on point. I have to tell so many people to aim higher. The amount of people who say if i can have tenth of their success i'll be happy.

My attitude is f#@5 you, I'm going to be bigger than them.

Nathan we both have a bet with David Risley that I'm going to make more money and be more successfull than you both in 2010, let's go and get it brother!

Biggest point to note is have dreams but have a plan to achieve them, don't just dream about it, go and get it!

    re-tweeting it now
  • Awesome post...it's on like Donkey Kong! :)
  • I'm with you. Being realistic-especially when what you want is well within reach-is ridiculous. Being "unreasonable" is the best way to make big things happen. Thanks for the reminder.
  • Nathan - great post. I have always been a big dreamer, and though my parents supported me, it never felt like they believed I'd end up doing anything I dreamed of doing (even though my dreams were never too 'outrageous').

Now, I'm on the edge of being a police officer, after years of volunteering with the department. I'm on my way of starting my own company, I'm following my dream of being a linguist... life is great.

Don't give up on your dreams, people. In the words of a famous Dutch band.... "wie ben jij in dit leven, om je droom op te geven"... who are you in this life, to give up on your dreams?
  • Same here, somehow...I don't think they'll ever take blogging seriously...you should hear them laugh when I talk about E-Books! Ah well...such is life :)

Awesome that you're pursuing your dreams and that's a great quote. Thanks for sharing!
  • It is so true. I had people crush my dreams on a daily basis when I was in my management position. Sadly once I got their I realized it wasn't what I wanted to do the rest of my life.

I have always had a passion for computers, and have made new dreams about being a problogger.
  • Misery loves company. Awesome that you've decided to go for it.
  • Nathan, great words here that are pretty straight-forward, but somehow a lot of people have trouble doing these simple things. Yes, many don't actually plan out their endeavors, but I find "taking action" to be the most prevalent factor that stops people in their tracks.

You wouldn't believe how many times I've had conversations with friends/associates in my field that have totally *awesome* ideas. They'll chew my ear off with all aspects of it, directions to take and plans for the future... which sound great on paper and I could see it becoming a great success. The problem though is they stop right there.

It's all fun and games *talking* about what you're going to do, but the realization then sets in "damn, this takes a lot of work" plus you're likely going to have to do it on your own. I'd almost rather someone take action full-force even without a plan because at least it has a chance at succeeding - doing nothing though other than talk gives you no chance whatsoever.
  • It's frustrating isn't it? I want to shake them until they believe in themselves, but sadly many people only believe it when they see it...and sometimes not even then.

Obviously you don't struggle with that, and it's up to guys like you to lead the way.

    Keep rocking man.
  • Another good post sir! When I was in my late teens I wanted to be the best in the world in everything, so I got frustrated and quit everything. I was in the mindset of "if I just reach the end goal I will be happy". Luckily, I've learned to switch from that mindset to one where I enjoy the process and only do things that bring joy right now.

Might of been a bit offtopic, but oh well.
  • Sounds like you and I have a lot in common in that regard :)

Thanks for stopping by Henri, and Happy Holidays to you!
