Podcast: Choosing Between Text, Audio, and Video

I’m backtracking just a bit in order to talk about getting started with one of the 3 types of blogs. Some people just don’t like to write, so we’ll talk video and podcasting. The goal in this podcast is to convince you to get started and go!

As always, you can subscribe via iTunes or RSS.

Intro/outro provided by Oleg Mokhov.

Release Your Dreams

Nathan, this good. I would love to SEE you. You got some ustream.com coming soon? I love livestream.com (it's easier). look forward to SEEING YOU. :)
  • Thanks Pam. If you head to http://buildingdigitalempires.com you'll see a few of my videos. I do USTREAM occassionally, but it's not my favorite medium. Prefer pre-planned video :)
  • Right now I am really focused on incorporating lots of video into my to-be-business model. Why? Because my blog is for college students and our life is very unique and it is better captured through video than writing about it. Plus most of them rather watch an interesting or helpful video than that of the same nature just in text form.

I guess we just are sick of reading text, because we are always around textbooks.

I have really never thought about doing podcasts. I do not know if college students would be interested in just listening to me or others talk. I think they would rather have me play music. I think podcasting has lots of potential just like video, but I would just need to be more creative with what happens during the podcast so it doesn't sound like and audiobook.
  • Video is where it's at man...that's a good move. Get good at that stuff and you'll be way ahead of the game. I don't read a lot of text either.

I'm doing something cool with Oleg Mokhov that takes the concept of podcasting and music and puts them together...going to be really cool. Stay tuned for that one :)
  • I will be looking forward to it Nathan! You are like one of the only podcasts I really listen to, just fyi.
  • Podcasts are good for people on the move but soooo boring listening to them on the computer with nothing else to look at! Video's better, epecially if the presenter is presentable:) But reading rocks - it's scannable, easy to copy quotes/reminders/, easy to go back to and refind specific info.

I like listening to you but I can't help thinking I could get this info faster if it was in text and well edited.

Thanks for sharing though, I think I'm just too busy this week!
  • Some people love 'em...some hate 'em...no worries. It's just my way of trying to reach everyone.

Unfortunately, most transcriptionists don't work for free.
  • I didn't listen - 15 minutes is a long time. I'd much rather have a transcript as I can read faster than you can talk ;). The movement toward video without having other options to consume the information is really very annoying to me. I know I am missing information that might be valuable, but it just takes too much time to "get it". Plus, if I miss something, it is much harder to rewind the video than it would be to just scan back up on the page.
  • Well, that's why I still write 3 times per week and make video. This podcast isn't video, but there's not really a way to deliver a podcast any other way than this.

But, that's where having 3 different types of content comes in handy. Something for everyone.

Sorry you didn't enjoy this one...maybe try one of my posts instead?
  • Nathan,

I love your posts. It's just when content is only presented in a way that I
can't speed it up and still "get it" that I feel frustrated. Sorry for my
    little rant.

    Sherrie St. Cyr
  • No, it's OK :)

I've thought about paying for transcription, but I just haven't made it that far yet. Something I'll do at some point.
  • I've done a few podcasts and some videos as well as writing posts.

Something that works well with doing a podcast or video post is to provide written content with it. Just a short explanation of what the podcast or video is about is all that's needed.

Personally I find that long podcasts hold my attention more than a long written post would. Same with long video posts.

I also like the medium. When you do podcasts or videos there are no more secrets separating you and your audience. You aren't just a photo-shopped picture anymore. You are just another human with human flaws. I think the long term benefits vastly outweigh the initial discomfort that "exposing" yourself causes you..
  • I like podcasts too...you can listen while you work. You can get them on an iPhone, listen while you drive, etc.

I still like to read, but finding less and less time for it. I'm going to do a lot more podcasting...in fact...stay tuned for a very cool project coming your way soon :)
  • Helpful podcast,

It's really just about finding your voice and then finding the best media to convey your message. Podcasting wouldn't be enough; I'll go for video blogging.
Keep rocking, your "show" is really informative.
  • Thanks man, I really appreciate that. It is tough to find your voice, but the only way to do that is practice. Good luck on the video, keep me posted.
  • nate, fwiw I used to do acting as a kid and one thing we were taught was to speak (project is the word in theater) from the stomach not the throat - what we all day during the day. it takes practice but it's worth trying. your style is fine by the way. not a criticism, just a tip for an old fogie.
  • I have not tried doing podcasts yet, but I definitely can see the benefits to using multiple mediums. I am just exploring video for the first time (which was how I discovered my equipment was in dire need of upgrading!) and I see the benefits of video, first because I can do a 3-4min video much faster than I can type a 500 word post, and second because it allows you to post the video in multiple sources to promote your site. Podcasts can obviously do the same thing, and since I get nervous on camera, I might even like podcasting more!

I did listen to the entire podcast, but I was wondering if you felt that there is a certain length that is better (yours was 15min this time) and if keeping people on your site for that long to listen was a problem. I have heard that longer videos usually don't get played all the way through, similar to 1000+ word posts...

This actually gave me a great idea for my guest post, will be sending it over in a couple of days....
  • Keith, when you create a video and put it on your blog, insert a small (50x50) image before the text starts.

Add the word Video into the alt tag. Google smiles when it sees this and indexes your blog post as with video, ie it will show up in the Video results if people search for these keywords.

At the risk of horrendous self-promotion, you can see what mean here

    http://www.ivanwalsh.com/video-blogging/video-h...

just mouseover the gif and you'll see the alt text.

note that the title tags also say Video.

    It really helps.

    Ivan

and hi nate, if your there. great job you've done here!
  • Thanks for the tip Ivan. I insert a pic at the beginning of every post, so I will go back and add that alt text (video) to the alt text and see if that helps....
  • no prob, Keith. this site is worth looking at re vid tips http://www.reelseo.com/
  • Well, any shorter and it's tough to get the point across, and any longer and it's definitely tough to keep them. That's one of the reasons I offer the download and the iTunes feed...that way people can listen anywhere.
