The 10 Sterotypical Attributes that Define Successful Bloggers

This is a guest post by Bob Bessette that I think hits the nail on the head in regards to what it takes to be a successful blogger. Although I wouldn’t expect everyone to have these attributes in common, I’m betting that more fit than do not.

What do you think? Make sure to show some love and leave a comment and RT below.

blogger attributesI tend to think that there are certainly more similarities, than differences, when it comes to us bloggers.

We are a unique group and we have what I call stereotypical attributes that are, for lack of a better word, exemplary.

These attributes define our very personality and spirit. I must say that I am proud to be included in this lofty group of individuals whose main goal in life is to grow personally and improve their lot in life.

1. Success-oriented

I tend to think that all bloggers are successes. We always tend to think of successful bloggers as owning blogs which have a certain Alexa rating or Page Rank, but that’s not the way I see it. If you’ve worked at creating a blog and have spent the time to write about your passion, you already are a success. I know the work that it takes to get a blog off-the-ground, technically and otherwise. To say that you are a blogger means to me that you are successful regardless of your current rankings.

2. Goal-setter

To build a blog takes a certain type of person. That person realizes that they must have certain goals in their life if they hope to grow personally, and as a blogger. Taking time to set goals and track them during the year is a prerequisite of any serious blogger.

3. Passionate

We all know people who are passionate. Basically all of the bloggers I have met are passionate in their lives and in their writing. How cool is it to be included in a group of individuals who bring passion to their lives on a daily basis?

There is no way someone can continue to build a blog without bringing passion to their writing on a regular basis. Granted, some days are better than others, but passion is definitely a stereotypical attribute of all bloggers.

4. Focused

Writing a post requires focus. I’m certainly not great at multi-tasking. I like to focus on one task, complete it, and move onto the next. Being able to focus on the task at hand is an attribute of all bloggers.

Being able to eliminate distractions is extremely important when it comes to blogging. Focusing on your content with the readers’ perspective in mind is another common attribute of a blogger.

5. Communicator

We all might not be great at the spoken word but, as bloggers, we need to be able to get our message across. We do this through the words in our blogs. If we weren’t passionate about wanting to get our message to our readers, we wouldn’t be blogging. We realize the importance of using our blogs as a communication tool.

6. Out-of-the-box thinker

Boundaries are something that a blogger simply cannot see. Possibilities are boundless and limits are unknown. Recognizing this fact is an attribute of all bloggers. There are new technologies, resources, and techniques to expand the growth of our blogs.

Bloggers also see the economic opportunities that a blog could open up for them in terms of freelance writing, consulting, or marketing their businesses.

7. Information gatherer

For some of our posts, it may mean that we need to gather information from various resources. We may want to cite a post from another blogger or a periodical that we read online. Being able to gather information and present it effectively in a post is a requirement of all bloggers.

8. Analyzer

If we want our blogs to succeed, we need to be able to analyze what works and what doesn’t in our own personal blog setting. Posting interval, type of content, advertising, guest posting, and site design can all have a drastic effect on traffic coming into our blogs.

Constantly evolving your blog by making changes, in any or all of the above, and analyzing the effects of those changes, is extremely important. Staying abreast of your traffic using Google Analytics or other tools is important if you want to understand what is affecting your traffic.

9. Inquisitive

Bloggers need to understand what their readers want to see in the post content. This is why one of the most common attributes of a blogger is to be inquisitive. Asking readers for their input not only shows that the blog owner cares about what they are writing, it also fosters a relationship with the reader that could grow into being mutually beneficial. Which brings me to…

10. Collaborator

Collaboration is becoming more and more important in the blogging world. A blogger working in a vacuum is a blogger who is destined to fail. Working with other bloggers is becoming more and more common and can be seen all over the blogosphere.

Bloggers are seeking out like-minded individuals to work on joint ventures. One form of collaboration is guest-posting, as I’m doing here on Nathan’s blog. It is a way for me to get more exposure and, at the same time, Nathan is able to add some new content to his blog. And, more importantly for me, it gives me a chance to get to know another blogger whose style I find very appealing.

We, in the blogging world, are fortunate. We get to hang out, so to speak, with other success-oriented individuals through our blogs and our comments. Blog owners are successes, in their own right, for creating, nurturing, and growing something that is so passionate to them.

The attributes discussed in this post define not only bloggers, but, more importantly, a classy group of individuals with which I am proud to be associated.

  • I agree I believe what you just describe is what I am. I use to hate writing or even the thought of reading something long, when I got into blogging I learned to open my mind and discover there is more to writing then just words. and letters.
  • Nathan,

This is an awesome post! You make blogging sound poetic with the ideas of passion and success. Keep up the posts!

    Andy
  • Thank you Andy. It wasn't a difficult post for me to write. After having met so many passionate, successful people in the blogging world it was easy to list their attributes. I appreciate your comment.

    Best,
    Bob
  • Bob, I think you just defined me! ;P Good points made all around though and I especially like this sentence,

"A blogger working in a vacuum is a blogger who is destined to fail."

That is exactly what many fail to do, but something essential to a successful blogger. Can't really climb a mountain by yourself, bring other people along.
  • Hi Taylor,
I'm hoping to continue collaborating this year. There are so many like-minded individuals who we can all connect with. That's one of the great things about blogging. Thanks for commenting.

    Best,
    Bob
  • Yup. And not a problem. :)
  • Jen
Great post Bob! Blogging has definitely helped me develop a lot of my skills.
  • Hi Jen, thanks a lot for reading. I agree. It shows in your posts!

    Best,
    Bob
  • Yup! I'd say that about sums it up for me too! Proud to be part of a prestigious group of fellow bloggers. Thanks for summing my existence up in one blog post, LOL!
  • Hi Sean,
Thanks for commenting and, I agree, us bloggers are a prestigious group!

    Best,
    Bob
  • I'm trying my best to put in the hours. Just trying to find those hours is the tough part. Thanks for your comment and I agree that communication and collaboration are extremely important aspects of blogging successfully.

    Best,
    Bob
  • communicate and collaborate, absolute key!

I like this post a lot, I would add be yourself. I was going to say be unique but that kind of makes people not be themself, which has the opposite effect, I would echo Mike, put in the hours!
  • Bob,

Great stuff here. I think out of the box thinker and collaborator are just awesome qualities that any blogger should have. What's interesting is that we start to evolve as bloggers after a certain point and we get really innovative in terms of what we are capable of. I think any blogger can benefit from considering all of the things you've mentioned here if they identify which ones they are good at and put them into practice right away
  • Hi Srinivas,
Great points by you. I am still evolving as a blogger myself and I'm doing my best to try to think "out-of-the-box". I think the opportunities and possibilities are out there and utilizing the attributes that are detailed in this post can hopefully help us to reach those opportunities/possibilities. I am learning from people like Nathan and others, more experienced than I am.
Identifying what we are good and utilizing those attributes effectively is a challenge for all of us. Thanks for your thoughtful comments.

    Best,
    Bob
  • That's true, and I think once you get there it's really important to keep pushing yourself and expand your limits.
  • Spot on! I see all of these qualities in the top bloggers I read, and I would like to think I aspire to these as well.
  • Thanks for the comment. I would like to think that I do as well. :-)

    Best,
    Bob
  • Hey Bob,
I'd like to add patient. Most of the best bloggers didn't have overnight success. I think of Darren Rowse taking two years or more before starting to take off.
  • Great point Gordie,
Patience is so important and I've done my best to try to be patient. Someone told me when I started to keep working at it and grow your blog organically. I've tried to heed his advice and I know, as you do, it takes time to develop your brand. Thanks for pointing out that important attribute!

    Best,
    Bob
  • Patience is my weakest link. I don't know how to stop working quite honestly...Mike will attest to that :)
  • Hey Bob and Nathan,

    I'll add another attribute: weird/leftfield.

"Regular" folks rarely blog. The thought of sharing their value online in article and product form is foreign. Or if they do, it's usually a journal for their friends to read.

And try describing how a blog can help a business grow to a traditional business person. Or how the blog itself can be profitable and a business unto itself.

No, to be a successful blogger, we have to have that bit of weirdness in us. The nonconforming, nontraditional way of thinking and doing.

I'm proud to be left of center :)

    Oleg
  • Hi Oleg,
So true! And I'm proud to display and possess those weird/leftfield qualities!

    Best,
    Bob
  • Great list! There does seem to be a certain personality amongst successful bloggers. I also think that bloggers are naturally helpful people. Seems like successful blogs are about helping people solve particular problems or move forward in some aspect of their lives, and all successful bloggers give a lot of information for free.
  • Bonnie,I like it and agree wholeheartedly. I have been extremely fortunate to have been helped my fellow bloggers as well. And my blog, in particular, is geared toward solutions or tips people could use in their lives. I learned from an extremely popular blogger when I just started out that the number one goal of any blog is to add value to the readers' lives. I try to think of that whenever I write a post or have a guest poster. Thanks for your input.
    Best,
    Bob
  • Great point Bonnie, it's all about bringing your own experience to the table. We're all experts at something.
  • Good post Bob! :) Certainly to be a successful blogger you need to be most (if not all) of the above.

I will also say positive attitude goes a long way. After all - a moaner rarely is a doer!
  • Yes Rhys, great point. I guess given all of the above attributes it would probably be difficult to be a moaner. But, I'm sure there are plenty out there.. :-)

    Best,
    Bob
  • So true...quit complaining or get out of the way!
  • Good to meet you Bob. You missed one. Hard worker! I haven't met a successful blogger yet who doesn't work his or her socks off.

(He says, typing this at 11PM at the end of another 14 hour day!)
  • OK Mike, you are correct! I guess I just made an assumption that hard work is a given. And, having followed you a bit, I know how hard a worker you are...Thanks for adding your input..

    Best,
    Bob
  • I haven't worked in months...I spend a lot of time at the PC though :)
