Giants Among Men

I like to talk about the future of media and the future of technology, but I normally don’t venture into other areas because I’m not familiar enough to comfortably talk about them. However, when I saw this article on CNN the other day, I realized that the future of technology would not just impact our computing and our scienctific understanding, but that it woud affect the physical look of the world we live in. It is becoming easy to see, looking at these buildings, that the future we read about in books is slowly becoming reality.

The article describes a variety of buildings currently under construction, including the Freedom Tower in New York City, but it is the pictures that really share the story. Seeing buildings tower over cities the way these 13 buildings will, is both awe inspiring and intimidating. Are these megastructures going to be the way of the future, or are they simply monuments to people that have nothing else to do with their money? I remember playing Sim City as a kid and seeing the future as biopods, built like skyscrapers, housing thousands of people. We can’t predict if that will be the case, but these projects serve as good indicators that it may be. I’m looking forward to seeing them up close and in person, what do you think?

with the biggest humanity challenge, enormous population growth, knocking on our door, it’s no wonder this kind of building are necessary, but would I like to live in such building-city on 212th floor? No, but I’m not sure our children would have a choice.

Maybe these new buildings will redefine the 212th floor experience? Seasteads are an interesting alternative as well…I’ve got a post on the way about that.
