They Shut Me Down!

Word to the wise, be careful who you clue into your business ventures! In case you never read the post, when I got to Afghanistan I decided to start a little business on the side, by connecting consumers with a product that was in demand.

Well, months later, it turns out that the Army just isn’t happy with their people making a little extra money on the side (even when the officers are highly overpaid in the first place and poor Joe doesn’t make squat) and I’ve been given orders from high places to shut it down! Wow! What a crazy way to begin 2009 right? I mean, here I am with tons of good things going my way, and Uncle Sam decides to try and knock me down. Well, lucky for the business world, I don’t plan on changing, but in the interest of living to tell the story of this place, I have decided to temporarily shut down the website.

I mean hell, I could have fought it, but what’s the use – choose your battles right? It was an experiment to prove that anyone can make money selling things they have in front of them, and it worked – to the tune of a few thousand I would guess. So my final thoughts are:

1. Don’t tell the Army that you are trying to rise above your situation – they don’t like it!

2. If someone works once without much effort, it will work again – only better.

On a side note, you might notice the widget that sits on the top of every post on the blog. The fundraiser is for the V Foundation and I am trying to raise $1,000 to fight cancer on my way to the REV3 Triathlon in June. If you have the money or the inclination to help, I’d appreciate any donations you are willing to offer. Besides, the only way that it is going away is by me reaching that $1,000, so if you want it gone, donate!

This is why I’m fighting for Jimmy V; how are you fighting for him?

That’s it for now. Keep changing the rules and changing the game.

-Nathan

Release Your Dreams

  • Lesson learned. It's neither the business of your employer or those around you who can't or won't help you what you do in your spare time. Your employer wants your total dedication to their mission/vision, and typically there's no room for yours. Have had several employers tell me that I have to get any moonlighting of any kind "approved." What they don't know won't hurt 'em.
  • And by the way, they are certainly no Google!

  • I agree, only tell people about your idea that you can trust. That sucks that the army shut you down. They are just big bullies. I hope they don't catch on to this blog.
  • Hey Karl,

Yeah I suppose I should keep things quieter here...I can't afford for this one to get shut down! All in all, I'm just happy the experiment worked.
