Weekend Update – Entrepreneur Style

Comments Off

building an empireIf you’re new to the blog – my Saturday project update is something like a weekly “state of the blog address” where I give you the low down on my current projects and future plans. My goal in doing this is to be able to explain where my income comes from and show you a few ways that you can monetize your own blog or website.

The Biggest Launch

Unless you’ve lived in a cave, you’ve heard me mention Beyond Blogging at least once over the past several weeks. The Beyond Blogging launch, which is something that Mike and I planned for nearly half a year before you actually got to see it take place, was an amazing success and it’s not only improved my bottom line, but has also introduce me to new audiences and platforms.

There were some issues during the launch though, which were primarily driven by the clash of different business types, that made for some very interesting conversation…to say the least.

Although I didn’t anticipate these issues, I have become fascinated by them in a way that’s had me thinking about the different types of people that exist within our space and the type of products that are marketed to them. As a result, I’ll be speaking about this more than once during the next week or two…hoping to capture your opinion for the debate.

The Numbers

The numbers from the Beyond Blogging launch were amazing. We sold several hundred copies in the first 2 days, hit 5 figures in the first 24 hours, and are still selling dozens more per day.

Has the launch died down a bit? Sure, and I suppose it’s bittersweet, because although I have time to catch up with other parts of my life, there’s something in the rush of launching a product that is unique and cannot easily be captured in normal living. I’d also like to work on keeping the launch momentum continuous, at least through January, so keep your eye out for new strategies to be implemented for that.

Aside from keeping the buzz going and the Beyond Blogging book in the forefront of every blogger’s mind, we’ve started to plan for phase 2.

What Does the Future Hold for Beyond Blogging

The discussions are still young, but we know this much:

There will be a 2nd volume, and it’s possible there might be an annual edition to capture the “who’s who of blogging” each and every year.

We’d like to work on something actionable as a step 2 for the book, and we’d like to feature bloggers in a variety of niches, both before and after they hit A-List status. There are a lot of options, and we’re very excited about the potential of the Beyond Blogging Project.

Other Stuff

I think I’ve already mentioned that Facebook Rockstar will be launching within a month or so. This project was requested by Twitter Rockstar owners and has been fun to create because I’m able to capture my consulting techniques into multimedia format, and provide them to people in a way that they’ve asked to consume them. So in other words, I’m not just making something up…I’m creating based off of a consumer’s needs, which is how business should be done.

It’s better for both parties involved that way.

I still do the social media thing over at MakingitSocial.com, where I consult and offer specific social media advice. I’ll be posting for Copyblogger, Problogger, DavidRisley.com, and Social Media Examiner over the next few months, and I’ll be working on a few more guides to follow up on the social media ones…probably a guest posting mini-guide, a guide to building blogs, and a guide to niche blogging.

2010 is Awesome

This is going to be the year I make the transition from Army life to civilian life, so I’ll be working hard to replace an annual income within the next 3-6 months of effort. From there, I plan on taking Beyond Blogging to first 6, and then 7 figures.

I like creating things, and then building them up to their potential. My 3 words this year, to echo what Chris Brogan asked Friday, are create, develop, and expand…as in Create an Empire, Develop Empires, and Expand Empires.

I’m hoping we can create something together, be it an empire or a village. The key is just getting started and turning that excitement into something real and concrete. I think we can do it, and I’m looking forward to making it happen.

What Do You Have in Store?

Share with me, your plans for 2010, both in the comments, on Twitter, and on Facebook. Let’s talk about how we can change the game together.

Hey Nathan, congrats on the success of the BB launch (I was in right away, but I'm an easy target as I've been in a resource-hungry phase, now transitioning into a use-what-I've-got-and-use-it-WELL one…) – something to emulate for sure!

I posted some goals for 2010 on my blog at cliffjump.net, and while they are ambitious – I have a number of irons in the fire and am starting from scratch on most of them – I have finally arrived at a point of total commitment to them. It's taken some time to get here (I'm 39), and I could wax regretful about the 'wasted' time but in fact I have had an interesting ride and learned a lot and consequently bring that to the table.

My 3 words – right off the top of my head – are Accept, Engage and Commit. Accept my journey, what it has been, where it has brought me, what it requires of me next… Engage with the community and with the task(s) at hand. Commit to my goals and to the work required to get there.

My inner task is to stop comparing myself to people who are 'more successful', eliminate jealousy and 'entitlement' psychology, and focus entirely on creativity and value. And so, off I go…

Thanks for buying the book, feel free to shoot questions over at any time, via email, twitter, or the blog.

I'll check out the goals…I'm very goal oriented myself, but I've found that between goals and now must be an action plan, that's where my 5 year plan came in handy.

I really like the accept part of the equation, that's very important and sometimes very tough to do.

    Keep crushing it :)

    Nathan:

Congrats on your launch. I have followed your site for a few months now, and love tracking your progress from soldier (thanks, by the way) to on-line product developer.

My goal for 2010 is to learn as much as I can. Learn how to turn my passion and knowledge into a site that helps others. Learn how to overcome the fear of stepping off the ledge, in faith. Learn how to convince my wife to relax, because it will all work out!

Wishing you and your readers an awesome year to come!

    Deren,

Thanks for sharing, and for adding a comment to the mix. Feel free to do more of it!

The journey has been a blast, and I'm super pumped to see where it leads in the future. I feel your pain on the wife bit…mine is finally coming along, but at first it wasn't that way at all.

    Keep Dominating,

    Nathan

I'm going quarter by quarter in 2010 due to client concerns. Very difficult to set goals when you aren't sure how your client portfolio is going to develop.

That being said, I have 3 little info products under way. Don't really want to say much about any of them yet. I do have some accountability partners on these projects, I'll get 'em done!

  • http://lifestyledesignforyou.com Gordie

I'm like Dave, also going quarter by quarter at this stage. It seems more manageable as my blog is only hitting puberty now.

You've done well to achieve what you have while holding down a job too. I fought for you and Mike in some comment threads when the anal retentives came out after the launch of Beyond Blogging. I'm always happy to support two great guys and your work.

    Nathan,

I liked your comment about, “The key is just getting started and turning that excitement into something real and concrete.” You can spend months and years planning. However, until you start, you are still in a state of inertia.

I recently started reading your blog and e-mail newsletters. You are an inspiration to me. I am thrilled to say that I have begun my first blog. It may be in the early stages, but it is concrete and it is real!

    Thank you for your inspiration.
