As you said my friend “The Internet allows us now, like Mike said, to buy what we think is the best music directly bypassing the record companies saving us so much money.”
Don't you think that to create a music company big or small that middle man has invested his efforts & money , he is the only man who has believed in that singer's ability & compitence to put him up.Don't you think that the person launching that singer is giving the wings to his music. There have been plenty of musicians in this world before…………………….. But Elvis is Elvis not only by his own efforts but also by the efforts of every man that has done something ……………….like wiping up the sets after his performances till the person that has produced his music albums…………………. Don't u think they have some share of that worth he has today……………….???

I can tell already that you and I would get along great

I didn't realize that others like me/you existed, that's awesome.

I used to pirate music…and then I realized that I was being irresponsible because I was painting the music industry as the bad guys and in the process, forgetting that many of the artists are busting their ass and not making a thing from the label.

Now, I buy tons of music, especially if the artist is an up and comer. It makes me feel good to support and kind of “make up” for my past mistakes.

I've thought about taking on the “pay what you want” model, and this adds fuel to that fire.

So Ayn Rand is my favorite author (and I'm also buddhist, so it's no wonder I've been reading your site all evening)

My husband is a musician and performer (audiobody.com). When his albums are ripped off and given away for free on sharing sites it's hard not to be annoyed. It's annoying because someone else is controlling whether it is free or not. It reminds me too much of Atlas Shrugged – Reardon metal being taken from him.

So instead he decided to sell his music as pay what you want. That way everyone could buy a cd, even if they wanted to pay a penny. They normally sell for $10. Surprisingly, they average at least $5 per cd now, but sell 4 times as many cds.

I'm so impressed with those numbers. There are people who just want everything for free, but there are others who are willing to pay you for your hard work.
