Why Do I Blog?
The Backstory
Contrary to the title, I rarely talk about myself on this blog because most of my readers are not here to learn my life story. Although I find my own life perfectly exhilarating, I am willing to bet that short of me becoming famous, the rest of the world may not find me all that interesting anytime soon. However, I thought that since you are here, it might do me some good to explain why I blog and what I hope to accomplish in doing so.
I’ve been an entrepreneur at heart ever since I can remember. As a kid I was more interested my own pursuits than I was in school, and it took me several attempts to finally get the motivation to finish college. It wasn’t that I was a poor student, I just wasn’t that interested in formal education because I had planned on starting my own business instead.
I’ve made several small startup attempts; some were mildly successful while others were more of a learning experience than a success. However, I hit a lull during my mid-20′s that I couldn’t shake. So I decided to join the Army for some direction and to serve my country. During my time in the Army, I have developed both the discipline and motivation to make more advanced attempts at entrepreneurial success, which is where blogging comes into play.
First, let me mention that somehow through this process I found new energy to pursue goals I’d long given up on, such as running marathons. A new found dedication to running and physical fitness has rejuvenated my body and mind in such a way that I just can’t keep new ideas away. Physically and mentally, I feel like a 16 year old again.
And that brings us back full circle to why I have decided to start this blog. There are several answers, but the most obvious is money so I will tackle that one first. Blogging gives me a chance to both exercise my entrepreneurial muscles and be a part of the web 2.0 revolution. There has been a lot of money made lately (see: Man sells blog for 15 million dollars, and John Chow’s Blog Income Report) and will be a lot of money made on the internet over the next several years.
I am trying to use my skills to develop a successful blog in order than I can create enough income to spend more time with my family and invest in other forms of business. The way I see it, blogging is an enormous committment of time and energy and I honestly do not believe that the model is sustainable over the long term (that is a topic for a new day). However, I believe that over the short term I can entertain my readers, properly brand my name, and prepare my domain for this eventual transition.
I don’t need to make a lot of money. I just want to make enough to enjoy the lives of my children before they grow up. Also, as much as I enjoy serving in the Army, I don’t want to spend another year away from my family. I have enormous plans underway to start a charity called “The Dharma Foundation,” which will be hosted at my other blog, Live the Dharma. My main goal is simply to make enough money so that I can spend the time I need to make my family better and make the world better.
I’ll finish by giving you the other reason that I blog. I love writing and I’ve never had the patience, discipline, or courage to write the novel I promised I would. This blog gives me an outlet to develop those three aspects of my self and as I progress towards that goal I will learn how to be a better writer in the process. I enjoy sharing my thoughts and my opinions and I would probably continue to blog whether I had an audience or not. In the meantime, I hope those of you that do stop by from time to time do enjoy what I have to say. Let me know in the comments from time to time and I’ll be more than happy to spend some time in conversation with you.
