Achieve Your Destiny

You pour yourself into every blog post.

You give yourself away in every comment, RT, and generous email of praise and encouragement.

But people don’t seem to notice.

You give yourself away over months and months of free content. Your community builds and you think you’re on top of the world.

And then you ask them to buy something…whoosh! They’re gone to the next blog.

Why do lies taste so good?

Where others throw smoke, you bring the fire. There’s truth in what you offer, but for some reason it seems as if people prefer to eat the lies.

They say they don’t want to hear about money, but they worship it.

They say they’re there for you until you ask them for something.

They want you to succeed…as long as you don’t before they do.

This is the nature of the beast, and it’s the demon we all face.

Why?

I’m not sure I have an answer. Human nature perhaps?

The cynic in me says that people are selfish and free seeking.

The realist in me says yeah, that may be true, but how the hell does that help me? I can’t fix them. I can only fix me.

I think that’s close to the truth, at least the truth we need to hear.

There are two things I’d like to accomplish in this post.

1) Show you that you have something of worth to offer the world.

2) Show you why you’ll never be happy trying to please someone else.

I’ve been there

I tried to please people every hour of every day. In some ways, I’m still not comfortable doing anything but…yet I know it’s not healthy.

I’m a watcher, and there are a few people I’ve been watching as of late. One of them worked their ass off to build something that made people happy and gave people value.

There were cheerleaders and everyone was saying “rah, rah!”

But when it came time to raise the price of the tickets from free to a few nickels…the crowd disappeared.

The cheerleaders left. The fans left. The team was on the court wondering WTF happened.

I’ve been there, and it’s a dark place.

Two mouths

I’ve also watched people do the opposite of what they say.

They say they are turned off by money and marketing, but they fall for it every time.

You…the gal that tries to do things differently…well it doesn’t work out so well. You’re a friend, but not a lover.

The lovers always get the prize at the end. The drunk dude at the party always gets the chick. Not because he’s better, but because he’s worse.

It’s not you, it’s them

Screw them.

Seriously.

If selling something turns people away, then they weren’t true believers in the first place.

If trying to help only gets you a pat on the back, then you’re going to the wrong parties.

I know it’s tempting to sacrifice your values in order to change the state of now, but trust me, it’s not worth it.

Those people that you’re chasing…well…they aren’t your people, and as hard as it might be to bear, it’s good to find that out.

What you have to offer the world is more than just a cheap ass ebook and a nice sales letter.

It’s more than a circle of friends that seems impossible to break.

No, what you have to offer is an idea. Innovation. Idealism. Truth.

Do you know why there isn’t more of that in the world?

It’s because it takes guts to stick by your guns.

It takes confidence to be the only one with a vision…to refuse the coward’s way out.

Why You’re Failing

Do you know why you aren’t seeing the results you want?

It has nothing to do with what your doing, at least from the non-technical side.

It’s because you’re chasing people instead of making them chase you.

You’ll never be happy trying to please someone else because in doing so, you chase their dream and give up on yours.

It’s like spending 4 years in high school trying to get the prom queen, not realizing that the better looking, better loving, “girl of your dreams” is waiting just around the corner.

Looking at the closed door instead of the open door right down the way.

In the words of Fleetwood Mac: “You can go your own way.”

It might take longer to get there, hell…if you’re like Howard Roark it might take a lifetime, but at least, in the end, you’ll be a place that you recognize.

That dream that you see ever so clearly inside of your head.

Look at the empire beneath your feet. It’s something you’ll have built, not because you caved, but because you stayed true to your vision, and more importantly, to your integrity.

Take that with you every day, and when you’re feeling down, remember the story you’ll be able to tell.

It’s going to be an amazing one isn’t it?

I was listening to the album “Sometimes” by City and Colour when I wrote this.

Pretty much nailed it, man. I see a lot of chasing going on. It just doesn't work.

Personally, I am friggin delighted with my conversion rate. I'm delighted that a bunch of people that comment on my blog are also customers. It feels good.

Now if I had 10 times the traffic at my current rate, that would be even cooler. But all things come in their own good time.

I left a little note over on James blog that I was more or less doing the “stealth” thing. Being quietly – everywhere. It's working.

I love having customers. It's totally cool.

    Best part of this post:
“It’s because you’re chasing people instead of making them chase you.”

It's a 3-part process – determine your market, determine your market's problems, solve them.

Unfortunately, some markets demand their solution be free so it's more difficult to deliver a product with value they will pay for.

You're right though, you can't please everybody!

    Hi Nathan,

This is a great post – delivered with more than a little syncronicity: I was discussing this exact issue with a client, only this morning.

I think that the way an entrepreneur BEGINS communicating with their audience does a lot to set the expectation for any future interactions (and how money may or may not change hands).

Beyond that, to get really deep and meaningful for a second, I think it has to do with the beliefs and values (ticking away in the unconscious mind) that create self worth…. or lack of it.

The entrepreneur who begins with a solid, unconscious belief in their own (high) self worth… attracts people who share that belief and are thus, willing (and excited!) to pay for it.

    What do you think?

  • http://nathanhangen.com/blog Nathan Hangen

That's exactly why I try to spend more time “behind the scenes.”

Customers deserve the best, and having people that believe in you makes all the difference in the world.

Stealth works, and I'm glad you're seeing some of that.

  • http://nathanhangen.com/blog Nathan Hangen

I'd even argue that you can “screw the market” and create what you feel called to create. Look at Blogger Beats. Everyone I asked told me it wouldn't work, but people keep digging it, and it's gaining traction.

There are a lot of projects like that in the hearts of those around us…just waiting to be released.

I think the market will follow those of us that are true visionaries and say “damn the torpedoes.”

  • http://nathanhangen.com/blog Nathan Hangen

Saw you took your blog offline. I'd like to hear more about that process.

2nd paragraph, spot on. Train your people to know what to expect.

your 3rd paragraph even more telling, and more true. We talked about this a bit on Twitter last month. I think this really comes out when shit hits the fan and people realize it wasn't as easy as they thought it would be.

That's the moment you can't effing quit.

When everyone is “looking for the market” and “trying to find the market,” others (*cough*) are swinging for the bleachers _creating_ the market.

Like keywords. Seriously, I can't be bothered. I'd rather create hot keywords than “find” them.

Although, I have to admit, my life would be much easier if I weren't so easily bored.

  • http://fearlesscreativity.com tobias tinker

Man, this is pure fire. Awesomesauce.

My own creative work, which now amounts to a decent amount even though I only seem to be able to produce in fits and starts (I've been at it a while now, i guess), has always been motivated by just doing the work I want to do, the work I feel driven to do. The work itself, and the process of doing it and the lessons learned along the way, are the reward. Sometimes some money comes along for the ride.

Now, I wouldn't exactly hold my career – especially fiscally, at least in its current phase – up to anyone as a shining example of what can be acheived… but I do think the work itself stands up pretty well, and moreover I seem to have a knack for happiness. So, should I suddenly trade all of that in for chasing sales?

Nah, I'm going to keep doing what makes me happy but try to do it in a bigger, deeper way, and get a bit better at presenting it, and believe that people will get the value of it over time – and that interesting, fulfilling, rewarding opportunities will come out of that. They always have. Sometimes patience is the best strategy. We'll see, in any case…

    Nathan,

I'm glad you wrote this post. It's really easy to get caught up in caring about haters and nay-sayers. I think that realizing that we all have something of value to offer is something important. After a certain time you have to just stop 'giving it all away for free.”

  • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

    Hey Nathan,

that comes from a lot of experience – it's hopeless to please everyone, and it's high treason to yourself.
I believe in Kelly's idea, even though I don't have the experience to prove it : Get your 1,000 true fans and you make your living.

It's right – make people chase you – if you do awesome stuff, and people trust and love you – you don't even have to worry about an existing market demand – you just create your own !

  • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

I see this happening all the time – nobody in the market asked for a super-expensive office chair – and along came Herman Miller's Aeron chair.

You either watch what's in demand (react) , or you do what feels right (act).
Both can work – but acting is the courageous choice.

Indeed… and I have very much made the commitment to getting the word out, though I have a lot to learn and probably more to unlearn in the process – I've resisted self-promotion for all the usual dumb cop-out reasons for a long time, failing to capitalize on a number of amazing opportunities. Self-sabotage masked behind artificial humility and standard-issue fear of success (which is really fear of risk, fear of being laughed at).

'nuff said here – I'm off to turn this into a blog post! Thanks for the juice, as always…

one way to make help the situation is to let people know upfront you are here to make a living .. and not offer free consulting for life.

  • http://entrepreneurblogr.com James Tayo

That is a tricky one though, Mars. How do you create market demand? Finding your 1000 true fans that are already looking for a solution is surely a better way to go, no?

  • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

    Hey James,

I know what you means – looking for a problem is what most people do.
but great innovators come up with products and/or solutions to problems that people didn't even had. No one missed an Iphone or Twitter back then – the creators just thought: wouldn't it be cool if…

  • Mike Korner

Thank you both (you and your muse :) for the thought-provoking words. Somehow this reminds me of a quote: “I am what I am. Take it or leave me alone.” -Rosario Morales-

The only thing I will add to the conversation is a reminder that sometimes people don't buy simply because the timing isn't right given all the stuff going on in their world. If the offer is compelling enough — and I don't just mean price — those people will be back when the timing is right.

OK, off to check out “City and Colour”.

Nathan. So on point. I've been giving and giving and giving for the longest time and now that I'm writing my first audio/video/ebook to put out there to purchase I know I'm going to find out who my message has really resonated with.

I realize I can't be everything to everybody. Doesn't mean it won't still feel emotional to a degree when they don't buy it or they do run. However I'm keeping my eyes and heart on those who do rather than those who don't.

Let's face it, blog products are on the way out (already gone for me). I am getting out of it completely. I have found other opportunities that are more lucrative, more fulfilling, more interesting, and so on.

I do wish I could have done a better job with HBT, but I am satisfied I made a little money, met a lot of really cool people, and I learned a lot about an industry that appears to be saturated with start ups and launches. All of which will help me as I venture into new projects and renew old projects.
